Fault limiting circuit breaker: Pilot installation

The solution for short-circuit current challenges

Concept and verification

The new Fault Limiting Circuit Breaker (FLCB) is the newest ABB prototype in the field of fault current limiters developed in collaboration with our utility customer (UKPN in the United Kingdom)

The functionalities of this new prototype are to operate multiple times without the need of changing the inserts, answering the pressing challenges that not only utility customer have when dealing with increasing generation and load growth as well as higher interconnection of networks.

Pilot project requirements

  • Ultrafast current limitation, enabling economical extension of the UKPN network
  • 40-80 times faster fault current interruption than a standard MV circuit breaker
  • 100 times reduced stress of assets due to active limitation of peak current and fault duration
  • Tripping criteria adjustable to ensure maximum flexibility in the network integration
  • Multi-shot operation
  • No liquid cooling

Product scope

  • The pilot covers the following ratings:
    • Nominal voltage: 12kV
    • Nominal current: 2000A
    • Prospective fault current: 25kA
    • Mechanical/electrical endurance: 1000 operations
  • The device is tested according to IEC 62271-100
  • The FLCB is mounted in a medium voltage panel and connected with medium voltage cables

Key benefits of the FLCB in the pilot installation

  • 70% cheaper than switchgear upgrades
  • 560MUSD* reinforcement avoided
  • 460MW* additional distributed generation connected
  • Faster connection of new distributed generation possible

* Applicable, if applied across Great Britain’s Grid
