The ABB Ability™ Operations Management System (OMS) for Mining will give mining companies higher visibility and control of operations across their facilities.

ABB OMS customers, both in open-pit and underground mines, benefit from the ongoing product enhancements through the subscription license, supported by our customer success and service teams.

The latest features:

1. Self-service dashboards to present real-time and historical data

The primary advantage of our newly developed, out-of-the-box self-service dashboards and integrations is the ability to implement them faster. These dashboards are designed to be generic enough to meet the needs of the majority of mining clients.

This functionality added to the core system allows users easy access to their relevant dashboards and easy navigation to other views for more detailed analysis in different contexts. Suitable for mobile, desktop and large screen combined with the unique features of the dashboard gives a completely new level of understanding to your mine operations, including location mobile and fixed equipment, personnel and material.

2. Intelligent Short Interval Control

Automated data review and decision suggestions significantly speed up the decision-making process. This allows proactive, operator-friendly alarm-band presentation. When an alarm is triggered, a mine operator’s response is based on the information linked directly to ongoing activities. This information alerts the mine operator about abnormal situations, such as, delay, breakdown, equipment and personnel conflict, and is able to initiate corrective actions in real-time.

The enhancement was driven by the need to address the rapid-fire decision-making process in mining operations based on available data. For example, if a truck breaks down, the operator must quickly review current resources, tasks, and equipment positions to decide which truck to move to compensate for the breakdown. Our intelligent short interval control system automates this process by:

  • Automated data review: When a truck breaks down, the system automatically reviews the state of the data and the operation.
  • Decision suggestions: The system provides suggestions based on the current data, such as recommending which available truck to move.

3. New welcome page and way to present the status of haulage control tasks

Our latest product version boasts a much more streamlined user interface and user experience. It is cleaner, tidier, and significantly easier to use compared to previous versions and other alternatives. Beyond the functional features, the product now offers greater overall visibility and enhanced support for automation initiatives. We followed a user-centric design and collaborative development process:

  • On-site engagement.
  • Agile feedback sessions.
  • Global input collection.
  • Cross-functional team.

4. Automated data collection

When developing features for automated data collection, it was crucial to consider both senior management and the specific end users. Engaging with both groups has ensured that the system is not only aligned with the big picture goals but also practical and user-friendly for those who will use it daily.

5. Improvements to the Mobile Operator app

OMS_MOS_Light
The mobile operator station (MOS) has been significantly improved to offer greater flexibility. It can now be operated with or without planning, giving users the choice to either utilize OMS planning or use the system solely as a fleet management tool. This flexibility allows clients to tailor the system to their specific needs. Whether they require comprehensive planning capabilities or simply need an efficient fleet management system, the MOS can accommodate both scenarios. This enhancement ensures that the system can adapt to various operational requirements, providing a more versatile and user-friendly solution.

Overall, the use of MOS aligns digital work instructions and operational schedules with regulatory safety requirements, such as equipment checks and flagging overdue maintenance. Insights into operational inefficiencies and incidents (e.g. recurring near-misses in a specific area due to poor visibility) can lead to targeted safety training with improved work procedures and conditions.

The OMS for Mining coordinates and automates the weekly production schedule with real-time production execution. It creates a shift-based plan that tracks working progress and reacts to disturbances in real-time, having a positive impact on operational efficiency while lowering costs.
