External antennas are needed for the WDIO input/output modules (base station) and have a slightly directional pattern to enable optimization of range and focused area.

The sensor actuator interface devices (field devices) have integrated antennas.
The WAT antennas are typically connected with the WAC antenna cables to the WDIO.
