Expanding power plant capacity with innovative EBoP solutions

An ABB electrical balance-of-plant (EBoP) solution will help a thermal power plant in India reduce power shortages and meet spiraling demand for reliable electricity.

ABB is selected by VA Tech WABAG Ltd. (WABAG India), the appointed EPC process contractor of the overall project, as the technology and engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) partner for the overall EBoP solution of the plant.

The five-unit, 1,050-megawatt (MW) capacity Rayalaseema Thermal Power Station in the Kadapa district of Andhra Pradesh supplies almost 20 percent of the thermal power generation in the southern Indian state. The plant is adding another 600 MW of generating capacity to provide much-needed electricity to more than 49 million citizens, and help alleviate acute power shortages.

The new 600 MW generating unit is owned and operated by Andhra Pradesh Power Generation Corporation, (APGENCO), the public utility responsible for power generation in the state. ABB is providing a complete EBoP electrification solution for the expansion, including design, engineering, installation, commissioning and testing, in addition to supplying the main electrical equipment such as station, auxiliary and service transformers, low- and medium-voltage switchgear, bus ducts, cabling system and accessories.

ABB has vast EBoP solution experiences for similar plant capacity worldwide. With the same customer, ABB had successfully executed a thermal plant with two 800 MW generation units, which gives them the confidence and trust in selecting ABB again to help them deliver this project. Coupled with our plant process and engineering know-how, ABB’s total solution on integrated electrical, control and instrumentation packages is no stranger to WABAG India. ABB has a long term collaboration with customer for some of the major projects such as 100 MLD, India’s largest sea water desalination plant in Nemmeli, Chennai, where WABAG India was also the main EPC contractor.

ABB's engineering expertise and broad experience of providing seamless, integrated electrical systems for generation plants this size enables it to optimize solutions for customers. Project cost savings come from using ABB's in-house engineering experience including its global Operation Centers, which enable it to optimize solutions in areas like cable sizing, earthing and grounding calculation, electrical equipment sizing, single-line diagram, parasitic load and voltage levels and reactive power compensation.

ABB Operation Centers in America, Europe and Asia were set up to provide a common and competent talent pool able to tap best practices, application knowledge and process know-how from around the world. Operation Centers are the backbone of ABB's engineering solutions, and help standardize project engineering, global sourcing, product design and software development, which can then be deployed in plants everywhere.

This helps customers better utilize their internal engineering resources, if limited. A single point of contact with ABB also helps ensure customers with a simplified and hassle-free supply chain management experience through our multi-product and vendor collaboration approach.

VA Tech WABAG Ltd, is a leading multinational Indian company in total water management sector with an annual turnover of around $500 million. The company’s headquarter is located in Chennai and at present, it has a workforce of more than 800 employees.
