Driving out harmonics from the water network

ABB_harmonics_water_drive

Welcome to 4 For Water, Week 3.

This week's extra special for us because it's also National Water Week in Australia. Each year, National Water Week makes a splash across Australia inspiring individuals, education providers, communities and organisations, and utilities, to work together to build community understanding of water-related issues. Come join us on this awareness week as we take a closer look at the problem with harmonics.

So what are harmonics? They can cause damage to sensitive electric equipment, interference in communication equipment, and false readings on measurement devices.  A more reliable process is a more efficient process, and the substantial energy efficiency and performance gains of using variable speed drives (VSDs) to control the vast number of electric motors, pumps, and fans used in the water industry are well documented.

How do we ensure low harmonics to avoid disrupting networks? Especially in an age where we need to support sustainable power grid supplies with renewable energy to ensure a reliable source of energy for businesses and communities to keep pumps running, lights on, and systems uninterrupted.
