The evolution continues

The New Emax family of air circuit-breakers consists of six sizes: X1, E1, E2, E3, E4, E6 up to 6300A.
All the New Emax circuit-breakers have the same height and depth both in the fixed and withdrawable version and allow construction of compact switchgears.

Main benefits

Maximum safety is ensured in many different ways, such as racking-out with the door closed, degree of protection towards the outside up to IP54, various different safety locks and double insulation.
The innovative pole structure guarantees complete insulation between phases, and between the phases and neutral, while ensuring full possibility of inspection of the arcing chamber and the main contacts.
Lively performance. E1 now offers current ratings up to 1600A, whilst E3 is enhanced by the top performance level V.

The new trip units, which are amazingly versatile and simply to use, offer important innovations, such as the brand-new intuitive operator interface allowing a complete control of the system with just a few simply key-strokes.
Furthermore, there are new protections, new alarms and connection to handheld and laptop PCs using Bluetooth technology.

Emax DC: Direct Current

The Emax range of low voltage circuit-breakers includes the new Emax DC series for DC applications, conforming to IEC60947-2 standards. Thanks to the exclusive technology applied to the new PR123/DC and PR122/DC trip units, the Emax DC range is able to satisfy every installation and protection requirement up to 1000V DC / 5000A.

Automatic and Switch-disconnectors for applications up to 1150V AC

Circuit-breakers in this version are identified by the letters of the standard range (rated service voltage up to 690V AC) plus “/E”, and are derived from the corresponding standard Emax circuit-breakers. They offer the same versions and accessories as the latter. The Emax range of circuit-breakers for applications up to 1150V in AC can be either fixed and withdrawable, in both three-pole and four-pole versions. Emax/E circuit-breakers are especially suitable for installation in mines, oil and chemical plants, and for traction.
This range of Emax was tested at a voltage of 1250V AC.

Emax VF: Variable Frequency

Experience with designing moulded-case and air circuit-breakers, on-going collaboration with the major manufacturers of wind turbines and ABB’s particular interest in power generation from renewable sources have led to a pioneering solution for protecting variable frequency installations comprising Tmax VF moulded-case circuit-breakers and Emax VF air circuit-breakers.

Emax circuit-breakers can be fitted with electrical and mechanical accessories ranging from the more typical ones to the most technologically advanced equipment.

Shunt opening/closing releases

Allows apparatus to be opened or closed by remote control. Given the characteristics of the circuit-breaker operating mechanism, opening (with the circuit-breaker closed) is always possible, whereas closing can only be achieved when the closing springs are loaded. The release operates with both direct and alternate current.

Geared motor for automatic charging of the closing springs

Automatically loads the closing springs of the circuit-breaker's operating mechanism. Once the circuit-breaker has closed, the gearmotor immediately begins to reload the closing springs.

Auxiliary contacts

Auxiliary contacts installed on the circuit-breaker are available so as to signal the different states.
There is also a special version of the auxiliary contacts for use at less than 24V rated voltage (digital signals).

Mechanical locks

Different mechanisms are available allowing the circuit-breaker to be locked in the open position or in the racked-in/test isolated/racked-out position by means of keys or padlocks.

Mechanical interlock

This mechanism achieves a mechanical interlock between two or three circuit-breakers (even of different sizes and in any fixed/withdrawable version) by means of a flexible cable.
The circuit-breakers can be installed either vertically or horizontally, between two or three circuit-breakers, respectively.
