Maximum flexibility and scalability ensures data center uptime

2015-05-20 - Today’s businesses rely on uninterrupted Internet service and can’t afford even a second of downtime. When Systemec BV, a Dutch full-service Internet Service Provider, built its second data center in Venlo, the Netherlands, it decided on an ABB low voltage solution including distribution boards, a modular power back-up system, and energy meters.

“As an independent partner for medium and small companies, we are focussed on offering scalable and flexible solutions,” according to Jos Derkx, Director at Systemec BV.

“We wanted our second data center in Venlo to have a modular structure, focussing on maximum flexibility and scalability. Standardization is very important to us, as this allows us to serve several systems from one point and thereby guarantee the highest possible uptime. We were able to achieve this modularity with the solutions provided by ABB.”

The data centre in Venlo is equipped with ABB main and SMISSLINE TP sub distribution boards, combined with a modular Newave Uninterrupted Power System (UPS) as well as Circuit Monitoring Systems (CMS) and M2M network analyzers. Together with Dutch panel builder, GSV paneelbouw, ABB organized the project to provide Systemec BV with a future-proof, flexible and reliable data center.

Maximum uptime

When Systemec initially discussed the project with ABB in 2011, they quickly decided on the SMISSLINE TP system, as this perfectly linked into their flexibility and scalability. The components can easily be assembled and dismantled on the unique touch-proof rail system plus there’s no need for personal protective equipment, as the bus board is completely safe to touch.

SMISSLINE TP also allows hot ‘swapping’ offering a high level of reliability when compared to conventional systems as well as continuous operation, which practically eliminates fatal and costly downtime. ABB’s hot pluggable solutions are ideal for data centers as was the case for China Post Company, who also selected SMISSLINE TP when it decided to invest in a modern data center.

Measure energy consumption

“Another unique possibility offered by this system is to invoice data center users only for the energy they have actually consumed,” says Derkx. “ABB’s CMS system allows us to measure the energy consumption at the component level. Whoever decides to rent server or co-location capacity from us, will eventually only need to pay for the capacity actually used.”

With two strategic locations in Europe’s digital hotspot, Systemec BV hosts another data center in Nettetal, Germany, which is just across the border from Venlo (Netherlands).  The unique twin-data center locations offer reliable Internet connections and provide customers with the highest level of redundancy.

Systemec BV has been a full-service business Internet Service Provider and System Integrator since 1997. The company offers a very wide range of solutions for internet access, data communication, VoIP, SaaS, connectivity and more.
