The Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre (ADNEC) Capital Gate, also known as the leaning tower of Abu Dhabi, is a unique mixed use building consisting of offices and a 5 star hotel operated by Hyatt. The tower has recently appeared in the Guiness book of world records. The project installation includes an ABB i-bus KNX platform for hotel guest room automation and lighting control for common areas combined with the benefits of energy savings and flexibility of operation. The hotel guest room automation makes an ease of living to the guest since all the elements can be controlled with a single medium using the well-proven KNX technology.
The marvellous architecture of the Capital Gate building impresses guests already when they enter. It is an elegant structure with a near record-breaking 18 degrees inclination toward the West. The hotel itself has 4 exclusive conference rooms, and the Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre (ADNEC) is the largest conference and exhibition centre in the region.
The solution should be economical, easy to operate for the guest and user friendly for engineering, housekeeping and reception staff. Furthermore the system had to be capable of being integrated into the Property Management System (PMS) and Building Management System (BMS) by an open protocol. A maximum utilization of energy with less wastage and with high efficiency as well as energy saving via presence sensing instead of a card switch was required.
The decision was made for KNX because of the short installation time compared to a conventional system with the same functional scope. KNX offers conveniently arranged cables and a high flexibility in wiring. The KNX system furthermore offers the opportunity to easily install new components and to extend the features of the building automation solution in the future. High convenience, low power consumption and great reliability were also reasons for choosing KNX.
The system detects the occupancy in the guest room and switches between energy saving and guest comfort mode. There is a huge saving (around 30%) by controlling the guest room HVAC, lighting and curtain control system. The system will change the set point and fan speed (fast cooling mode) from the reception once the guest checks in from the reception desk. The lighting control in the common area includes controlling of circuits through time schedule and occupancy.
30 % saving compared with study for conventional GRMS (Guest Room Management System).
