Gost in the Cyrillic language means standard. In 1989 the Russian authorities introduced for the first time regulations related to quality control for products manufactured and sold within the country. The regulations were first implemented in the early 1990Ãs providing the legal and technical foundation for the national certification system. From 1992 the directives were put into practice.
Products manufactured within or imported into the Russian federation should be certified. The Gost-R certificates can be compared to the European CE declaration of conformity system, with the difference that the CE system is based upon self certification. It is the responsibility of the manufacturer to ensure that his product complies with all the relevant standards, whereas a Gost certificate may only be issued by a registered authority.
