Universal data connection units are used for analogue and digital communication terminal devices such telephones and ISDN cards. Universal data connection units have one or two RJ sockets, suitable for RJ45 plugs (also called Western plugs or modular jack); also RJ11 and RJ12 plugs can be inserted. Universal data connection units with two sockets are switched either separate or in parallel. The contact positions of the sockets can be fitted fully with eight or with only four contacts (the inner four positions).
The designation of the universal data connection unit depends on the number of sockets and the type of socket switching.
