Viking Grace

The world's first LNG-fuelled large passenger ship

Finnish owner Viking Line has picked up the environmental plaudits for Viking Grace, delivered by STX Finland Oy and now running between Turku, Finland and Stockholm, Sweden.

Viking Grace, the world's first LNG-fuelled large passenger ship, owned by Viking Line, who chose ABB to supply the complete electrical power plant and propulsion system together with energy management system -- EMMA, which is a part of ABB’s advisory suite. EMMA helps to manage energy-related processes, practices and decisions on the new ferry to use fuel more efficiently during operation.

The 2018m ship has capacity to carry 2800 passengers and is distinguished as the first large passenger ferry in the world to burn low emission LNG.

Viking Grace was shortlisted for Nor-Shipping’s prestigious Energy Efficiency Award 2013.

“One of the top priorities at Viking Line is to lower the emissions and fuel consumption on our fleet . We were looking for a good monitoring tool that automatically regulated power consumption and was as easy to operate as a traffic light as a result ABB’s EMMA became our first choice.” Kari Granberg, Project Manager at Viking Line
