We are happy to announce the release of new functionality for the all-in-one protection and control relay REX610. Released in 2022, REX610 is the latest addition to ABB’s Relion® product family. With innovative simplicity at the fore, REX610 is a pure plug-and-play solution with installed hardware modules unlocking all available functionality. REX610 can easily adapt to changing protection, communication and network requirements for the lifetime of the relay. This makes REX610 futureproofed for the evolving grid – a flexible and cost-effective choice that supports safe, smart and sustainable electrification as distribution networks continue to grow in size and complexity.
In its first functionality upgrade, REX610 adds motor and arc protection to its application coverage to ensure people and processes are optimally protected. The new arc protection module allows REX610 to detect arc faults in air-insulated low-voltage or medium-voltage metal clad switchgear in just a fraction of a second to minimize the damage and make sure process downtime is kept to a minimum. Adding motor protection makes it possible for REX610 to keep asynchronous low and medium-voltage motors responsible for critical processes running to minimize production downtime.
Product range
Protection and control REX610
What’s new?
- Arc protection (AFD) module for detecting arcs in air-insulated metal clad switchgear caused by, for instance, human errors during maintenance or insulation breakdown during operation
- Motor application
- Emergency start-up (EST, 62) to allow motor start-ups during emergency conditions despite the risk of thermal overload, which might damage the motor
- Motor load jam protection (50TDJAM) to protect the motor from excessive temperature rise during stall or mechanical jam conditions, which will accelerate the deterioration of the insulations of the system
- Loss of load supervision (37) to detect a sudden loss of load – considered to be a fault condition – to prevent aggravating the fault in the coupling mechanism or harming personnel
- Negative-sequence overcurrent protection for machines (46M) to disconnect the motor during voltage unbalances to prevent severe overheating
- Thermal overload protection for motors (49M) to prevent the motor from overheating, which might cause premature insulation failure of the windings or even destroy the motor
- Negative-sequence overvoltage protection (59NS) to protect rotors from overheating due to voltage unbalances, which may occur due to broken conductors or asymmetrical loads
- Phase reversal protection (46R) to detect a reversed connection of the phases to a three-phase motor, which will cause the motor to rotate in the opposite direction
- Motor start-up supervision (49,66,48,50TDLR) to protect the motor against an excessive start-up time and locked rotor conditions during start-up to ensure the thermal stress level remains within the allowed limits
- Runtime counter for machines and devices (OPTM) for calculating the accumulated operation time of a machine or device to facilitate scheduling of service
- Positive-sequence undervoltage protection (27PS) to protect small embedded power generation plants from potentially dangerous situations caused by network faults on a transmission or a distribution line, such as short circuits or phase-to-earth faults
- Frequency protection (81) for protecting network components against abnormal frequency conditions
- Synchronism and energizing check (25) for checking that the voltages on both sides of the circuit breaker are perfectly synchronized to ensure safe closing of the breaker
- One additional instance of three-phase voltage measurement (VA, VB, VC) added
- Frequency measurement (f)
- Three-phase power and energy measurement (P, E)
- Sequence voltage measurement (V1, V2, V0)
Customer benefits
- Multiapplication coverage with one freely configurable device for flexible and cost-effective tailoring to application-specific requirements
- Modular and scalable design for easy and flexible customization and adaptation to changing protection and communication requirements
- Easy to order, set up, use, maintain and keep in store due to small number of variants
- Plug-and-play solution with installed hardware modules unlocking all available functionality
- Extensive range of default functionality, including communication, for easy alterations with no additional costs
- Access to incrementally released new functionality via firmware updates
- Withdrawable plug-in unit for swift replacement, short meantime to repair, and minimized costly downtime
- Possibility of replacing one or several modules instead of replacing the entire relay
