Anne Aprina, Vice President of Electric Vehicle Services PLN Icon Plus explained that the government has prepared a number of regulations to welcome the era of domestic electric vehicles. The Presidential Decree number 55 of 2019, concerning the Acceleration of the Battery-Based Electric Motorized Vehicle Program, became the first milestone to start the historic era of electric vehicles in the country. Another supporting regulation is the implementation of a Value Added Tax (VAT) incentive program for the purchase of four-wheeled electric motorized vehicles and buses, as stipulated in the Minister of Finance Regulation (PMK) Number 38 of 2023, effective since April 2023.

"By signing this Memorandum of Understanding, PLN Icon Plus and ABB are demonstrating their support to the government in the era of electric vehicles across the nation. Based on a data from PT PLN (Persero), as of December 2022, the number of public Electric Vehicle charging stations or SPKLUs in Indonesia was recorded at 588 units spread across 257 locations. Compared to the previous year, there has been a significant increase of 120.22%, from 267 units in 197 locations.

As a sub-holding of Beyond kWh Business, PLN Icon Plus has received a mandate from PT PLN (Persero) to develop a business beyond electricity as known as Beyond kWh. Apart from focusing on connectivity and digital solutions, now PLN Icon Plus is also developing a clean energy (green energy) solution called Rooftop Photovoltaic (PV) and encouraging the growth of EV’s and the supporting ecosystem. This also includes developing digital solutions for SPKLU and other EV-related services that are integrated with electricity services in a platform called PLN Mobile.

The e-mobility evolution in Indonesia

As one of the largest and fastest-growing economies in Southeast Asia, Indonesia has also been making efforts to promote e-mobility. In 2020, the Indonesian government announced its ambition to become the largest EV producer in Southeast Asia by 2025. The government has set a target to have at least 2.1 million electric motorcycles and 20,000 electric cars on the road by 2025. In addition, the government has offered tax incentives and subsidies for EV manufacturers and buyers to accelerate the adoption of e-mobility.

ABB E-mobility has successfully installed multiple DC fast chargers in Indonesia, including several for BPPT in Serpong, West Java and for the PLN Distribution Unit of Jakarta at its head office in Gambir, Jakarta. ABB also showcases a charging unit at in Indonesian headquarters, located in the WTC office complex at the heart of Jakarta’s business district. In addition to the DC fast chargers, ABB E-mobility has installed home charging AC wall boxes for dozens of residences, shopping malls, and car manufacturers. These efforts have provided strategic support to the government’s effort to adopt smart, reliable, and emission-free mobility solutions.
