ABB Frosinone achieves UL Solutions platinum rating for zero waste to landfill

  • First ABB facility to achieve highest platinum rating for zero waste to landfill
  • 100% of site’s waste diverted from landfill – 9% is thermal-processed for energy recovery
  • Major sustainability strategy milestone for ABB’s circuit breaker production

ABB Frosinone in Italy is the first ABB facility worldwide to achieve platinum rating for zero waste to landfill according to the UL2799A Environmental Claim Validation Procedure for Zero Waste Classifications. To achieve the platinum rating, 100% of the Frosinone site’s waste is diverted from landfill.

Achieving zero waste to landfill is central to ABB’s work to preserve resources and promote circularity. ABB’s 2030 sustainability strategy goes beyond actively enabling a low-carbon society with key technologies for energy transition. The company is also implementing sustainable practices across its value chain and the lifecycle of its products and solutions.

ABB Electrification Smart Power’s Business Sustainability Leader, Alessandro Bottarelli, said:

“We are working across our complete value chain to deliver more sustainable solutions for all our stakeholders. Earning independent, platinum validation of our work to manage waste in the most sustainable and circular way shows what can be achieved when everybody is committed to positive change.”

UL Solutions has previously designated two ABB Electrification Smart Power facilities in Xiamen and Xinhui, China as Gold, with landfill diversion rates of 99% and 95% respectively. “As part of our commitment to progress and transparency, our ambition is for all our main production sites to be UL-validated by 2025,” said Bottarelli.

UL Solutions’ platinum validation is the result of continuous efforts by the Frosinone team and demonstrates the facility’s contribution to sustainability through responsible and innovative waste management strategy. Frosinone is also an ABB Mission To Zero site, using smart energy management and renewables to achieve continuous carbon footprint improvements.

UL Solutions’ Environmental Claim Validation Procedure requires at least 90% diversion through methods other than waste to energy to achieve a Zero Waste to Landfill designation. To achieve the UL 2799A Platinum rating, 100% of all waste from the entire Frosinone site is now diverted from landfill. Most is reused, recycled or composted; with 9% processed for energy production.

UL Solutions Environmental Project Handler, Chiara Della Ducata said: “Achieving zero waste to landfill requires a comprehensive, responsible approach to production, consumption and disposal of products and materials. Using UL Solutions independent Environmental Claim Validation Program, ABB Frosinone has demonstrated a commitment to circularity principles by handling waste in an environmentally responsible and innovative fashion. By earning the Platinum Zero Waste to Landfill rating, customers can feel confident that ABB Frosinone is minimizing the environmental impact of Electrification products.”

  • Everyone at ABB Frosinone is committed to circularity principles by handling waste in an environmentally responsible and innovative fashion
  • ABB Frosinone is the first ABB facility worldwide to achieve platinum rating for zero waste to landfill
  • Sustainability is embedded in every part of the life cycle of ABB solutions
  • 100% of the site’s electricity is from certified renewable sources
  • Advanced circuit breakers for renewables, microgrids and digital energy management are produced in ABB Frosinone

Staff training has been critical in educating, empowering and building a culture where zero waste is a priority for everybody. Training and workshops covered managing waste in accordance with current environmental legislation and the importance of waste separation. Waste sorting and identification takes place wherever waste occurs. There are around 170 different labelled production waste containers across the Frosinone site, and each workstation has separate paper-cardboard and plastic waste containers.

ABB supplies essential technologies for a low-carbon society, producing them in ways that minimize their environmental footprint. Sustainability is embedded in every part of the life cycle of ABB solutions. ABB Frosinone produces advanced circuit breakers for renewables, microgrids and digital energy management. 100% of the site’s electricity is from certified renewable sources, 100% of the waste is diverted from landfill and a supplier sustainability program is driving continuous improvements in Scope 3 CO2 emissions.

Established in 1969, ABB Frosinone is an ABB Center of Excellence for the development and manufacture of low voltage circuit breakers. The site produces more than 3.5 million circuit breakers a year and employs more than 1,000 people. It is an ABB Mission To Zero site and one of Italy’s national Industry 4.0 Lighthouse facilities.
