ABB showcases latest extensions to charging portfolio at ACW China

All-round connectivity. Relentless protection. Providing consistent, smooth and reliable user experience.

On November 14, 2018, ABB, introduced its new 7kW AC charger and Terra 184Z 180kW DC fast charger to the Chinese market at the ABB Customer World China 2018 held in Xiamen, China. These additions to its portfolio further support ABB’s position as global market leader in electric vehicle (EV) charging, demonstrating its ongoing commitment to innovation in the field of sustainable mobility.

ABB’s 7kW AC charger provides high safety and reliability. The ideal choice for residential communities, office buildings, shopping malls, industrial parks and parking lots, it features flexible network and Bluetooth connections. The chargers also benefit from a color LED ring to clearly indicate to passing drivers which chargers are available and voice prompts to instruct a driver on how to connect their vehicle. It includes a double-front-cover and modern design, is easy to maintain, offers fast and simple installation and 24/7 availability in both indoor and outdoor applications.

Meanwhile, in the DC fast charging field, ABB introduced Terra 184Z. An outdoor 180kW DC fast charger, the Terra 184Z is suitable for applications in public space and unattended operations, supporting the trend of urban e-mobility. It puts public safety first and has efficient operation at its core. Moreover, the product design is ideal for roadside Parking & Charging and transportation terminal installations, addressing the fast changing requirements of e-taxi and electric logistics fleets.

Part of ABB’s Terra DC charging station family, the Terra 184Z features a fully-fledged safety system, including interlocking mechanism, heating and dehumidification, intelligent self-inspection, 30mA leakage protection, and smoke and tilt induction. To ensure the charging connector is always replaced correctly, it also includes a sensor which will alert the back office and trigger a call to the user if there is an issue.

Connecting to the ABB Ability™ platform of digital solutions, it provides highly intelligent IoT features, online diagnosis, pre-diagnosis management, online upgrading, and real-time monitoring of parameter conditions of more than 180 subcomponents.

This means that more than 90 percent of failures can be diagnosed remotely, thus reducing site service needs by over 60 percent. Moreover, its normal availability stands at 99.5 percent. The upgradable modular design makes it adaptable to long-term rapid development of EV technologies, significantly boosting service efficiency and lowering operation and maintenance costs. It is suitable for such charging applications as roadside, expressway, service station, and business space, and can provide 24/7 availability and an all-round guarantee for a more stable, faster and more reassuring charging service.

Currently, China has the largest number of EV users across the world, and is also one of the few countries that have announced the phase-out of fossil fuel powered vehicles. “As Chinese cities increasingly work to reduce their carbon footprint through initiatives which support electric mobility, new opportunities are available for us to maximize,” said James Zhao, lead division manager of ABB China Electrification Products.

“With our well-proven global experience and our leading digital technologies, ABB is proactively working with its partners to provide users with more intelligent and safer integrated charging infrastructure, contributing to sustainable social development.”

ABB entered the EV-charging market back in 2010, and today has a fast growing global installed base of 8,000 ABB DC chargers, including high-power chargers up to 350 kW, installed across 68 countries, more chargers than any other manufacturer.

Fortune Magazine recently ranked ABB #8 on its list of companies that are “changing the world” for the advances it has made in e-mobility and electric vehicle charging.
