At ABB Customer World China 2018, ABB introduces its Superstrut® seismic bracing solution to China, providing customized, solid support for pipes, conduits, ducts and cabling, which are easy to install and can withstand earthquakes.
Squeezed by three major tectonic plates, China is one of the most earthquake-prone countries in the world. More than 800 earthquakes of magnitude 6.0 or more have struck the country since the beginning of the 20th century, according to the Chinese Academy of Sciences, destroying more than seven million rooms over a 300,000-square-kilometer area.
There is no way to stop major earthquakes from occurring, but through careful building design and the installation of seismic resistant substructures, the number of casualties and size of economic losses can be reduced. ABB’s Superstrut® seismic bracing solution may be one way to mitigate damage to a building’s electrical system or to anyone who may be below its raceways.
Pipes or ducting trays usually hang overhead from vertical supports assuming such loads will remain static, but during an earthquake, these structures experience sideways (transverse and longitudinal) as well as vertical forces. ABB’s Superstrut seismic bracing solution provide supports to counter forces in all three directions.
“ABB’s Superstrut® seismic bracing solution will improve the reliability and stability of the buildings,” said Shawn Huang, local business unit manager of Installation Products, ABB China. “We are pleased to contribute to China’s construction sector by our innovation, as we do with many other key sectors to support China’s economic and social development.”
ABB Superstrut is fully compliant with code GB50981-2014 for Aseismic Design of Mechanical and Electrical facilities in Buildings issued by the Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development of the People’s Republic of China. The Code states that the buildings with a seismic precautionary intensity of 6 degrees and above shall adopt aseismic design. This means that the mechanical and electrical facilities in buildings must consider the use of earthquake-resistant supports and hangers.
ABB has developed the Superstrut® seismic bracing solution, a combination of special products and design services that can help to harden any structure’s electrical support system against seismic threats.
Armed with efficient connectors, Superstrut® seismic bracing makes fast installation possible, and also supports simultaneous operation of other functions. It eliminates welding operations and therefore pollution from the welding process, which mitigates related environmental protection measures such as forced ventilation and smoke extraction during construction.
ABB’s specialized design team provides safe and reliable support design along with installation instructions and guidance for site installation, thus reducing risks due to improper installation. In addition, the Superstrut® product has passed seismic, salt mist, and fire tests to ensure a safe and robust solution.
