Improving power quality with ABB’s innovative technologies

ABB is the technology leader in power quality. At the ABB Customer World 2018 held in Xiamen, ABB showcased a series of power quality monitoring and management products and solutions covering all voltage levels, supporting customers in utilities, industry, transport and infrastructure to comprehensively improve their power quality management and ensure reliable and economical operation of power grids. Why is power quality management so important? As technology advances and production process highly automates, the power network system efficiency and transmission capability are significantly improved. However, the continuously increasing non-linear loads bring a lot of electrical pollution including harmonic, which results in reduced system operation efficiency and even power network paralysis. In contrast, high-quality power can not only improve energy efficiency and industrial production efficiency, but also significantly improve ecological benefits and lower environmental impacts.

FACTS

ABB was the first to introduce Flexible AC Transmission System (FACTS) in 1950s and remains the technology and market leader in FACTS. Up to now, ABB has built nearly 750 FACTS projects around the world, accounting for over a half of the global FACTS capacity.

In power grid field, FACTS can significantly increase capacity of existing power transmission systems while maintaining or improving voltage stability, grid reliability and power safety. Compared with new transmission links or power generation facilities, the FACTS system reduces footprint, project duration and investment, while significantly lowering negative impacts on environment.

In industry field, this innovative technology has been widely deployed in the steel sector. It can significantly reduce the impacts of large electric-arc furnaces on power supply system and nearby power grids, and furtherly improve production efficiency and power supply quality.

Power quality monitoring solution

As a world’s leading supplier of integrated power quality solutions, ABB has a full range of products and solutions. By monitoring and detecting the operating condition of energy-consuming equipment, they provide customers with reliable data to rapidly and efficiently solve problems.

ABB eEMS Studio internet-based energy management system can effectively improve target energy efficiency through monitoring operating condition of energy-consuming equipment, protection and fault monitoring, operation management, energy consumption data collection and analysis. Currently, the solution has been widely deployed in such fields as building, industry, transport, data center and manufacturing. As an air circuit-breaker that enables total power management, EMAX2 can protect electric circuits as well as reducing energy consumption based on user demands. Its integratable power control module can evaluate energy consumption and manage loads to maintain or reduce power use during peak hours.

Power quality management solution

ABB power quality products that cover all voltage levels can help customers in various fields with power quality monitoring and management, and meet the customers’ requirements across the entire power value chain.

In the utility sector, the ABB capacitor and filter product portfolio can guarantee failure-free operation of electrical systems, reduce downtime and improve power quality, helping customers address various special operating conditions and improve efficiency. ABB has provided over 900 high-voltage capacitors to the Lhasa converter station in the Qinghai-Tibet ±400kV DC transmission project. They improve capacity and stability of the transmission link through reactive power compensation and harmonic filtering, supporting construction of a safer and more efficient national power grid.

In the industry sector, ABB power quality products and solutions have been successfully deployed in the entire automobile manufacturing value chain from engine manufacturing to pressing and coating, helping customers like FAW-Volkswagen and Beijing Benz reduce power consumption and improve operation efficiency. In addition, the ABB medium-voltage stepless reactive power compensator PQCR applied in industrial equipment can provide dynamic reactive power compensation for customers in such manufacturing sectors as semiconductor, LCD panel and tobacco production, and provide high-quality power to ensure safe and reliable operation of production equipment.

In transport & infrastructure, ABB active dynamic filters deliver excellent filtering results through unique closed-loop control system and individual harmonic selection, and have helped address the harmonic filtering challenge for customers such as Shanghai Metro, Beijing Telecom, Shengli Oil Field, Baosteel and Meishan Iron & Steel, etc. In the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge just opened, ABB capacitors installed at the subsea substation on the man-made island effectively compensate reactive power for all power-using units across the subsea tunnel including suspended jet fans. It effectively helps improve power utilization efficiency and ensure transmission of high-quality power for the subsea tunnel, ensuring efficient and safe operation of the modern cross-sea bridge.
