- Nickel-zinc chemistry offers a safer, more reliable alternative with a lower carbon footprint for mission-critical power applications
- ABB Electrification selects ZincFive as supplier for energy storage solutions
- Over 150MW of ABB MegaFlex UPS systems now deployed with ZincFive energy storage solutions
ABB is introducing nickel-zinc (NiZn) batteries to its range of power protection products for data centers, adding ZincFive as supply partner for its uninterruptible power supply (UPS) solutions. The addition of NiZn battery chemistry offers mission-critical data centers a resilient, efficient and sustainable energy storage alternative.
Sébastien Surply, Head of Power Protection, ABB Electrification, said: “As a technology leader in mission critical power, ABB continues to bring innovative UPS technologies to market with advances that support data center resilience and sustainability. Extensive testing has ensured ZincFive’s NiZn battery technology is a safe, reliable alternative to conventional lead-acid and lithium-ion batteries."
ABB’s UPS solutions with NiZn technology pack more power into less space, making them ideal for containerized data centers. NiZn’s lower cooling requirements can also help improve Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE), while the recyclability and smaller carbon footprint of the raw materials bring further sustainability benefits. Maintenance requirements are also lower.
ZincFive CEO and Co-Founder Tim Hysell said: “ZincFive and ABB share a commitment to reduce carbon footprint and operating costs for customers without compromising safety or performance. ZincFive’s nickel-zinc batteries have a significantly lower climate impact than conventional alternatives. As the sustainability of data centers becomes more important, we are leading the industry in bringing the power of good chemistry to market.”
ABB‘s MegaFlex high-power, high-density UPS global platform provides power availability up to 1.6 MW UL and 2.0 MW IEC. MegaFlex solutions integrating ZincFive’s NiZn batteries are designed for mission-critical computing environments such as data centers for colocation, cloud hosting, hyperscale and AI-powered data centers.
MegaFlex UPS combined with ZincFive batteries can be easily deployed within containerized e-houses, allowing higher ambient temperatures within a compact footprint. ABB’s complete UPS solution includes system installation, start-up and seamless integration of the UPS with NiZn batteries. Our global service network has successfully deployed over 150MW of these integrated systems.
