ABB is showcasing its latest technology for sustainable buses at Busworld Europe from October 9-12, 2023 at the Brussels Expo Center.
Its experts will be at Hall 7, Booth 745 to highlight drivetrain technologies and cable conduit system offerings. Together, these systems are designed to make the most of available space on board buses; use energy more efficiently so that buses can travel further between charges; improve reliability and durability; and reduce waiting times for passengers.
“We’ve made huge progress in electric drivetrain technology since Busworld was last held in 2019. We’re particularly excited about our new HES580 3-level power inverter, which will be the motor-friendliest inverter on the market for bus drivetrains,” says David Segbers, ABB’s Global Product Manager for traction systems. “It will offer bus operators an opportunity to extend the length of journeys by providing a cleaner power supply for motors.”
HES580 drive to extend journeys
ABB is introducing the HES580, the very first 3-level drive in the market for electric buses. While most buses today use two-level inverters, the 3-level topology reduces the harmonic losses in any motor. As a result, the traction motor utilizes energy more efficiently and can work more reliably over a longer lifetime to improve services for bus passengers and cut lifetime costs for operators.
Battery system cuts waiting times with ultra-fast charging
ABB is also showcasing the next generation of traction battery. The compact design minimizes the size and weight of the battery, enabling bus engineers to meet electrical performance requirements in a small space and limiting the overall weight of the vehicle. Meanwhile, ultra-fast charging improves passenger experience by cutting waiting times at charging stops.
Motors that can be configured for buses
The new AMXE250S traction motor will also be presented at Busworld. It increases the performance in terms of torque and power while reducing the weight of the motor. This motor design was developed specifically for commercial electric vehicles, which can vary widely in terms of size, role, and journey requirements.
Engineers can configure the motor to precisely match the performance requirements of their buses.
Rugged cable protection
ABB’s presence at Busworld will be completed with the Harnessflex® EVO™ Conduit Systems, which were developed to protect essential wiring on modern electric vehicles, including electric buses. Using high-performance cable protection protects cables against harsh elements and environments to minimize the risk of electrical failure.
