How to get a free power meter with every drive

Today’s Fun Fact Friday is on how to get a free power meter with every variable speed drive (VSD). And no, you do not need any special “coupon code,” nor do you need to place your order in the next 5 minutes.

Let's unravel HVACR complexities with Tim R. Skell!

Our expert, Tim R. Skell, spent almost 3 years sharing his expertise in the #FunFactFriday series on LinkedIn. Now, we are giving him a forum to exchange news, knowledge, and passion for HVACR technologies in the new ABB column.

Many modern VSDs display electrical output power to the motor. The ABB ACH580, ACQ580, and ACS880 Ultra-low harmonic drives even show actual input power.

These are not revenue-grade meters, so you will not be billing anyone with this data. But they are excellent to use to learn about where power is being consumed within your facility – without the need for submetering in front of VSD-driven equipment. They are also great for trending power consumption over time, and comparing like equipment to each other.

Assuming the drive is connected to a BMS or SCADA system, you could monitor that power information over BACnet for HVACR systems, or another protocol for industrial-based networks.
