Energy from heat, more efficiency for buildings and industrial processes

Harnessing heat instead of wasting it: this is how Alfa Laval enables process efficiency, reducing consumption and contributing to the energy transition

Being efficient, avoiding waste of electricity and resources, striving for a sustainable energy transition-these are concepts that have been repeated like a mantra in recent years. But what is being done to make them real?

Alfa Laval is a company active in the fields of heat exchange, fluid management and separation/filtration. Technically, it is the heat exchangers that create the conditions for heat transfer from one fluid to another to occur in an efficient and controlled manner.

The plate heat exchanger represents an important evolution of this technology: invented at the turn of World War I and World War II, it was used to pasteurize milk by taking advantage of an efficient and fast thermal process, without which the milk was in danger of spoiling.

Today this technology, suitably updated, proves useful within industries, in the service sector and in residential buildings.

Recovering heat to save energy

A substantial portion of the energy consumed today is used to heat or cool liquid, solid and gas materials. In addition to finding the most efficient way to perform this operation, it is possible to recover some of the energy used instead of wasting it.

"By taking advantage of plate heat exchangers, energy can be efficiently reused for other purposes, such as to heat a room or within other processes. - explains Stefano Meloni, Business Unit GPHE manager Adriatic Region at Alfa Laval - It is a technology that can be applied in any context, even on a large scale."

For example, a project together with a multiservice company operating in environment, energy, heat, grids and smart city technologies for district heating for a group consisting of about 6,000 households. Compared with what was done in the past, where heat was produced by burning methane or through waste-to-energy plants, today the focus is on harnessing heat exchangers within an adjacent production site.

These are smart exchangers, equipped with sensors that communicate their operating conditions in real time in order to achieve an efficient and sustainable process.

The data obtained feed special algorithms that monitor the instantaneous energy consumption of the exchanger.
