The development of an electric vehicle (EV) charging network serving Brazil’s major cities is under way thanks to a partnership between ABB and the Graal Group.
More than 40 ABB fast and semi-fast chargers are being installed on Graal forecourts and service stations in five of Brazil’s major states: São Paulo, Minas Gerais, Rio de Janeiro, Santa Catarina and Rio Grande do Sul.
The ten fast and 31 semi-fast chargers will contribute to Brazil’s transition from a mobility network that is heavily dependent on fossil fuels to one that incorporates an EV charging network.
The country has a goal of achieving net-zero emissions by 2050 and it already has a high share of renewables – 45 percent – in its energy mix. Brazil’s drive for industrial decarbonization, as well as the development of a domestic green hydrogen program, align with e-mobility targets that are leading to the development of a national EV charging network. The Fuel of the Future has a specific goal of using technology “to decarbonize the transport matrix.”
Graal has chosen ABB Terra 124CC chargers for its installation program, to offer ultra-fast charging times of less than 30 minutes, or for two EVs to be charged simultaneously.
Terra 124CC units are capable of recharging one electric vehicle at 120kW, or splitting this power between two vehicles. Graal customers will also be offered charging from 22kW AC Terra AC wallbox semi-fast chargers.
ABB fast chargers being used in the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship use technology already proven in real-world conditions to charge two Gen3 all-electric race cars at the same time.
