ABB fast chargers
Since December 2023, ABB fast chargers have been powering the electric ground support equipment (GSE) fleet of the ANA Group – the vehicles used, for example, to tow airliners over the final meters towards the terminal.
As part of ANA Group‘s sustainability goals, we are committed to decarbonization initiatives throughout our operations and with the support of ABB, we are proud to have installed fast chargers at Haneda Airport. This project represents ANA’s steadfast efforts of our sustainability goals as we continue to pursue our climate transition strategy.
Rintaro Sohara, Vice President, Ground Handling Planning of ANA
The DC chargers (Terra CE 54 CJG) are proven in airport use outside Japan and are designed to support three charging standards to prepare for future electrification needs.
These chargers are contributing towards the Japanese government's goal of "realizing a carbon-neutral and decarbonized society by 2050". The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism has set an ambitious target of a 46 percent reduction in 2013 greenhouse gas emissions at Japanese airports by 2030.
Beyond these international transport hubs, ABB’s EV charging solutions are being used across Japan: 900 DC fast chargers had been installed by the end of 2023, making a significant contribution to infrastructure development and emission reduction targets.
We are delighted to provide our charging solution to the ANA Group’s electric GSE vehicle charging facility. With our e-mobility solutions, we will continue to support the ANA group in achieving their decarbonization targets and ultimately support the decarbonization efforts of airports.

Japan's first electric tugboat
ABB’s electrification solutions are even reaching beyond land, thanks to our collaboration with an electrified tugboat project. The first vessel of its kind, The Taiga, has been created for Japanese towage specialist Tokyo Kisen Co. Ltd to use in the ports of Tokyo Bay and started operation in January 2023.
ABB is honored to be involved in such a prominent project to power the first electric tugboat for Japan. Our hybrid and electric solutions have established a strong reputation in the short-distance shipping segment, now further strengthened by this prestigious opportunity in a highly competitive market.
Munekazu Tanikawa, Local Division Manager, ABB Marine & Ports
The Taiga supports Japan’s ambition of achieving net-zero GHG emissions from international shipping by 2050, without compromising performance. The tug features Onboard DC Grid™, to enable simple, flexible and functional integration of energy sources and loads.
