The Italian production site for ABB residual current devices (RCDs) and energy meters in Santa Palomba is reducing its CO2 emissions by 675 tons a year. In addition to its existing renewable sources, a new photovoltaic system now supplies a quarter of the site’s energy.
Over 350 people work at ABB Electrification’s Smart Buildings facility to produce over 16 million devices per year. All electricity purchased by the Santa Palomba facility has been from renewable sources since 2019. Keen to progress its carbon reduction commitment, the team there collaborated with a logistics partner, Laziale Distribuzione, to implement an innovative smart grid project. Over 3,000 photovoltaic panels installed on the company’s warehouses next door to the ABB site now provide a peak power of 1.52 MW. In the spirit of joint action for the climate, photovoltaic shelters have also been installed in the car parking area which help to power 17 electric charging stations for the fleet of electric and plug-in hybrid company cars.
To monitor and optimize energy consumption, the ABB AbilityTM building management software solution was installed to monitor energy consumption in real-time, enabling the site’s team to collect insights either on-site or remotely. It also helps the site manage consumption efficiency on the most energy-intensive systems, such as air conditioning, the compressed air system, air intake and lighting (which is already 100 percent LED). By 2025, Santa Palomba plans to replace its boilers with high efficiency heat pumps.
