Driving social and sustainable progress in Brazil as the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship returns

São Paulo’s famous Sambadrome, the focal point of the city’s Carnival celebrations, will be filled with a different kind of action this weekend when the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship returns to Brazil.

  •  Season 10 of the all-electric motorsport championship continues in São Paulo on March 16
  • ABB’s turbine and pump technology generates renewable energy for the Brazilian network
  • Donations made to two Brazilian charities following Lucas di Grassi’s ABB Drivers of Progress award

In Brazil, renewables meet 45% of primary energy demand1 and ABB is supporting local customers as they expand low-emission solutions. ABB has entered into a power generation partnership with one of the largest wastewater companies in Latin America, which supplies approximately 30 million people in the region. Higra turbine and amphibious pump technology provide ready-to-use solutions with high hydro-energy efficiency, ease of installation and low maintenance. The innovative project means the high-water pressure created within the company’s pipes is used to generate renewable energy which can be distributed across the network.

ABB has also been implementing e-mobility technology solutions across Brazil to help meet sustainability targets. For example, a recent partnership between ABB and the Graal Group will lead to 10 ultra-fast charging stations and 31 semi-fast chargers from ABB being installed at Graal locations in São Paulo, Minas Gerais, Rio de Janeiro, Santa Catarina and Rio Grande do Sul. The collaboration will allow Rede Graal to offer electric vehicle drivers the convenience of ultra-fast charging, capable of replenishing a vehicle’s battery in less than 30 minutes, thanks to the same cutting-edge technology used in the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship.

Within industry, ABB is working with its customers to reduce energy use and emissions. Vital yet energy-intensive industries such as farming and construction will play a pivotal role in the decarbonization process. To that end, ABB is providing fully integrated gas analysis systems for emissions monitoring to multiple customers in Brazil, including some of the largest fertilizer and cement producers. These systems provide a stable and precise analysis of the composition of gases emitted from production plants, helping users ensure environmental targets can be met.

One of Brazil’s biggest energy consumers is the pulp production segment, accounting for ~16% of final industrial energy consumption2. For four decades, ABB has been collaborating with Brazil’s leading paper packaging company, Klabin, to help optimize operations, improve energy efficiency and increase quality of production. ABB technology achieves over 99% machine uptime, its quality control system (QCS) increases uniformity in paper and cellulose products, reducing losses and decreasing the consumption of raw materials, water, energy and chemicals. In addition, its power distribution, motor control and robotics solutions are found throughout Klabin’s facilities, improving plant efficiency.

More information on ABB’s partnership with Klabin and other notable projects in Brazil can be found on our Race For the Energy Transition web pages.

This race weekend also comes as charity donations of €10,000 are being made to two Brazilian charities - Instituto Ingo Hoffman and GPACI (Grupo de Pesquisa e Assistência ao Câncer Infantil). The charities were chosen by São Paulo-born driver, Lucas di Grassi, after he was named as the ABB Driver of Progress for Season 9, having made up the most places (69) over the entire season.

Following the race in São Paulo, the Championship heads to Tokyo on March 30th for the first Japanese E-Prix. The season calendar comprises 16 races in 10 global locations, including additional new venues Shanghai and Misano.

ABB is a technology leader in electrification and automation, enabling a more sustainable and resource-efficient future. The company’s solutions connect engineering know-how and software to optimize how things are manufactured, moved, powered and operated. Building on more than 140 years of excellence, ABB’s ~105,000 employees are committed to driving innovations that accelerate industrial transformation.  www.abb.com
