- Smart digital technologies deliver reduced CO2e emissions
- 100,000m2 of solar panels generate 50 percent of annual electricity needs
- ABB Xiamen is blueprint for other manufacturers to replicate
One of ABB’s major manufacturing sites in China has become a model for decarbonization through the integration of smart digital technology. The site at Xiamen, which makes low and medium voltage switchgear and circuit breakers on state-of-the-art production lines, has reduced its annual CO2 equivalent (CO2e) emissions by an estimated 13,400 tons, measured against a 2022 baseline, as a part of ABB's global
Mission to Zero program.

Integration of technology to deliver decarbonization
Multiple technologies and solutions have been integrated into the site to achieve this reduction:
- 100,000m2 of rooftop solar panels generate enough solar energy to cover around 50 percent of the site’s annual electricity energy consumption
- A smart energy management system analyses weather conditions to anticipate how much electricity will be generated and forecasts future power production of the photovoltaic (PV) panels
- The site’s complex energy ecosystem is controlled and managed by ABB’s ZEE600 control system
- This monitors and manages loads, battery storage and EV charging, to optimize energy management across the facility, which covers 425,000 m2 and employs more than 3,000 people
- The connection of the different PV fields, batteries, factory loads, and EV chargers has been made possible with modular power solutions

Modular systems easily to replicate
Installation of new technologies has made ABB Xiamen a flagship site for sustainable manufacturing, offering a blueprint for a clean energy future in China, with emission and cost reductions.
Reducing emissions across our own operations, to enable a more sustainable and resource-efficient future, is at the core of ABB’s Sustainability Agenda.
The solutions deployed at ABB Xiamen are easily replicated, thanks to their modular design.
“The scale and pace of our Xiamen carbon reduction journey is our most powerful example of how manufacturers of any size can create low carbon production sites – and quickly. By implementing ABB technology that is widely available, we are showing how to accelerate the journey to decarbonization. Our world-class demonstration site will show our customers and partners how low carbon ambitions can be achieved today through intelligent technology.”
- James Zhao, senior vice president of ABB China
As with other ABB Mission to Zero sites, such as those in Lüdenscheid, Germany and Santa Palomba, Italy, ABB Xiamen showcases to customers and other manufacturers how smart digital technology can enable their journey towards decarbonization.
