New 500-petaflop data center operates with innovative ABB power solution

ABB is supplying innovative power distribution solutions for data centers worldwide as they scale and deploy artificial intelligence (AI). The latest, located in Sichuan province, China, will be one of the region’s largest with 500 petaflops of computing power in its first phase.

The KCY Cloud Data Center’s huge data processing capacity requires a safe, reliable, energy-efficient power supply: minimizing costly downtime was a key priority for KCY. ABB developed a complete medium- and low-voltage power distribution solution to provide a secure power supply with optimum operational efficiency.

Mr Yang Bing, company director of project owner Sichuan Zhongdu Data Technology, said: “We are creating a high-quality AI data center here in Sichuan. This facility will provide strong support for the development of AI, accelerate digital growth within China, and will lay solid foundation for our future competitiveness.”

ABB Data Center Segment Head, Brian Johnson, said: “Innovative projects like the KCY Cloud Data Center demonstrate why customers work with ABB to develop complete medium- and low-voltage power solutions. Our expertise provides the reliability that data center operators worldwide need to support growing demand. ABB's data center offering is developed to be reliable, space and energy efficient."

The solution includes ABB’s 500mm UniGear ZS1 switchgear. With a footprint that is 25 percent smaller than traditional panels, it optimizes construction costs and floorspace. The addition of ATS dual power switching control cabinets, based on IEC61850 standard GOOSE communication transmission technology, enables high-performance horizontal communication between microcomputer protection devices. Electrical and mechanical interlocks in the ATS cabinet also ensure safe and reliable power switching. By replacing traditional substation devices with a digital network, they also reduce construction and maintenance costs.

ABB’s Emax 2 air circuit breakers and Tmax XT molded case circuit breakers are the core components in the low-voltage switchgear. Their all-in-one functionality and compact design further optimize space. Added digital functionality allows for easier and more accurate energy management to reduce operational energy consumption and optimize Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE).
