The power of internships: ABB’s commitment to learning and collaboration

  • Today we’re highlighting our programs worldwide which encourage the next generation in their career journey. We offer scholarships, internships, apprenticeships and summer jobs, lasting from two months to two years, in more than 100 countries.
  • With currently more than 1740 interns in 39 countries, we know the importance not only of what we teach them, but also of collaboration and what we learn from their perspectives.

Creating and investing in training and development programs are vital for building a skilled workforce that contributes to ABB’s continued progress and success. Through
tailored programs, we empower young employees with the skills and knowledge needed
to excel in diverse fields in a fast-changing world.

But it is not simply about what our interns, apprentices or students learn from us, it’s
about collaboration and mutual learning. They are a true source of creative ideas and innovative solutions, and we learn from them every day. This concept falls within ABB’s
‘Learn, Connect, Grow’ approach which inspires our colleagues to further own their
careers through knowledge enhancement in a collaborative approach.

Throughout the year, we have internships worldwide, across multiple business areas:

  • In Finland we welcomed more than 800 trainees in Vaasa, Turku and Helsinki during summer 2024. Learn more about the program here: ABB Summer Internship 2024 (careers.abb)
  • China - This year, over an eight-week period, our Robotics and Discrete Automation team in China hosted seven trainees from the RA Global Trainee Program (RA GTP) Batch VI for Business Orientation in China, providing an immersive learning journey with the 70-20-10 development approach to enhance their potential abilities. It’s a key building block of the two year long trainee program.
  • US - This year our Sustainable Talent Program brings together 15 students from universities across the United States. This program is designed for undergraduate students with anticipated graduation dates in 2025, 2026, and 2027 who are eager to explore the intersection of technology, sustainability, and innovation.
  • Italy - This year we held the fourth iteration of the Sustainable Talent Program which brought together 25 female STEM students and 25 colleagues across ABB divisions in a three-month program to network, exchange ideas and knowledge.
  • US - Since 2019, ABB has been offering apprenticeships to young people in the US, based on the Swiss apprenticeship model. At the University of Arkansas Fort Smith, ABB brings in high-school seniors to work at its industrial electric motors plant, complementing classroom training in advanced manufacturing received through UAFS and the local school districts.
  • Students from universities across the United States are participating in ABB’s Sustainable Talent Program. Throughout the program, the students engage in quarterly touchpoints and virtual sessions designed to boost their personal, professional, and technical skills.

  • Italy’s Sustainable Talent Program (4th edition) wrapped up in June and the next edition will launch in September.
"Developing and supporting our future talent is amazing. Seeing them thrive and engaging in dialogue, learning from their perspectives, is truly rewarding."

- Carolina Granat, ABB’s Chief Human Resources Officer

These programs, and ABB’s culture, have led to Universum’s ‘most attractive employer 2024’ award in selected countries, especially for engineering students. This year we were ranked as the 2nd most attractive employer in Finland among engineering students and the 3rd most attractive among the same target group in Switzerland. In the Netherlands, Denmark and UK we are in the top 100, while in Sweden and Norway in the top 50 most attractive employers. ABB was also recently mentioned as part of 2024 China's Favorite Employer Brand List by Zhaopin which includes 148 employers. Our Robotics Smart Future Program was mentioned as one which helps cultivate the next generation

We are looking for exceptional students to help us solve the challenges of today to enable a more sustainable and prosperous tomorrow. Learn more about how you can start your journey here: Student job opportunities - start a rewarding career | ABB Careers
