ABB helps New Zealand’s Watercare comply with new fluoride monitoring regulations

Watercare, New Zealand's largest water and wastewater utility company, engaged ABB and Water Engineers Limited to install and commission ABB Aztec AFM631 Fluoride Analysers in their Auckland water treatment plants.

The objective was to meet new regulations requiring all New Zealand water governing bodies to monitor fluoride levels in their facilities by 2024.

Based in Auckland, Watercare sources, treats, supplies, and disposes of water across Auckland as well as manages the city’s water infrastructure.

“Our goal was to have 10 Fluoride Analysers installed and working before the end of 2023 so that we could meet our new legal obligations set by Taumata Arowai, NZ’s water regulator, that required all water governing bodies to monitor fluoride levels in their drinking water from 2024 onwards,” said Sheila Brown, Senior Commissioning Specialist, Instrumentation and Control, Watercare. “We needed a trusted partner that had the technical expertise and could deliver and commission safe, reliable, quality fluoride analysers that would allow us to meet our legal requirements.”

The ABB Aztec AFM631 Fluoride Analyser is an effective safeguard in achieving safe fluoridation of drinking water through continuous, reliable, and accurate online monitoring. It provides protection against fluoride over-dosing, proof of legislative compliance and precise control of water fluoridation.

By utilising ABB’s highly reliable and accurate fluoride analyers and local technical service support, Watercare has been able to meet their project deadline and legal obligations. In addition, the team now has at their disposal low maintenance, user-friendly, quality instrumentation that ensures the safe fluoridation of potable water in Auckland.
