ABB's Large Motors and Generators division is recognized globally for developing and introducing energy-efficient technologies that reduce carbon emissions and improve business performance. With a wide range of high-efficiency motors and generators, the two factories are crucial in delivering tailored solutions that lower carbon emissions across various industries and ensure a more sustainable and productive future.
There is a saying in the Baltic countries: “Our own eye is the king”, meaning to witness with one’s own eyes is the most trustworthy experience. To help customers experience and understand firsthand how ABB’s technology leadership and domain expertise can benefit them by achieving their operational goals, the doors of the ABB’s factories in Jüri, Estonia, and Helsinki, Finland were opened for them.
ABB Large Motors and Generators factories play a significant role in energy-efficient technologies
The factory in Estonia plays a crucial role in advancing energy-efficient solutions. The facility is located close to the capital city Tallinn, which has a size of 21,700 square meters and employs around 370 people, serving a wide range of industries such as metals, chemicals, oil and gas, cement, mining, marine, water and wastewater, pulp and paper, wind power and others. The factory produces high-performance synchronous motors, induction motors, special design motors, and reliable generators manufactured to specific customer needs.
The Estonian factory is actively progressing towards net-zero emissions by implementing numerous energy efficiency and decarbonization initiatives. After installing two solar parks, the factory has significantly reduced its carbon footprint, cutting emissions by 180 tons annually and covering up to 9% of its annual electricity consumption. The factory also installed air-water heat pumps, replacing 300 MWh of gas-heated energy with 85 MWh of electricity and reducing CO2 emissions by 60 tons per year.
During the trip to Estonia, visitors got a detailed look at the facility’s structure, number of employees, production area and space and other important aspects, which were presented by Argo Aavik, Local Business Manager, at ABB Large Motors and Generators, Estonia. The next stop was exploring what industries benefit from ABB products produced in this factory and a tour of the production facilities where visitors learned about isolation technology.
The ABB Large Motors and Generators factory in Helsinki, Finland has a rich history of over 100 years in motor and generator production and it offers a broad range of products for all industries. The factory's expertise, particularly in induction and synchronous machines, ensures that the diverse customer needs with high-efficiency motors and generators are met. The 39,700 square meters facility is a key player in ABB’s global service network, providing lifetime customer support and maintaining a strong market presence through continuous research and development. The factory uses emission-free green energy and recycles all waste caused by its own operations.
In this factory, Petri Keisu, Sales Manager at ABB Large Motors and Generators, Finland explained to visitors in detail about electric motor testing methods and protocols, special test procedures, key figures, and quality control measures. Moreover, they were also shown the assembly line for electric motors.
Experiencing ABB’s innovations aboard the Tallink MyStar ferry
The customer trip included an additional experience, an exclusive tour of the MyStar ferry, which is an innovative vessel operated by Tallink Grupp, a major shipping company in the Baltic Sea region. Tallink ferries sale every day between Tallinn and Helsinki and are the role model of energy-efficient and sustainable transportation in the region. The Chief Engineer guided customers through the engine room, showing the components produced by ABB. This allowed customers to see ABB products such as drives, generators, and motors in action, experiencing firsthand how the equipment works synchronously to power the vessel.
Customer perspectives: the benefits of witnessing ABB’s solutions in action
Aldas Stankevičius, Deputy Chief Energy Officer at Achema expressed gratitude for the visit to the ABB factories in Estonia and Finland. “The trip met expectations as a lot of information was obtained about electric motors and generators manufactured by ABB”. Founded in 1965, Achema is the largest producer of nitrogen fertilizers and industrial chemical products in Lithuania and the Baltic States, employing over 1,300 people and producing about 2 million tons of fertilizer annually.
Walk the talk, but also make your “walk” visible
To conclude, ABB Large Motors and Generators factories are committed to driving productivity in a low-carbon world through industry-leading, energy-efficient products and solutions that lower total cost of ownership (TCO) while reducing carbon emissions. By aligning with the UN’s Paris Agreement targets and providing circular products and solutions, ABB is not only helping customers meet their sustainability objectives but also supporting broader global efforts towards a net-zero future.
The factories in Finland and Estonia play a key role in decarbonizing ABB's own operations through the electrification of 10,000 vehicles, sourcing 100% of our energy from renewables, and enhancing energy efficiency.
Equally important is making efforts visible through practical experiences, such as customer visits to ABB’s production facilities and to the customers’ sites. These opportunities allow for raised awareness among customers and other stakeholders of what can be achieved together on the road to net zero.
