- 37 percent energy efficiency improvement and 101.5 tCO2e reduction since 2019
- Team’s passion for the planet, data-driven decision making, and smart technology investments drive Mission to Zero™ progress
The ABB Smart Power team in Västerås, Sweden has shown what’s possible when you equip passionate people with the tools, information, and creative freedom to drive sustainable progress. Since 2019, the Västerås campus — newly inaugurated as an ABB Mission to Zero™ site — has reduced Scope 1 & 2 emissions by 101.5 tCO2e, equivalent to the annual emissions of 22 gasoline-powered cars.
Energized by data-driven decision making and tapping into renewable energy and smart building technologies, the team has achieved 37% improved energy efficiency. The site also runs on 100% electricity powered by renewable generation.
Mission to Zero™ is ABB’s program to reduce emissions and improve energy efficiency at its sites on its journey to net zero. Mission to Zero teams commit to improving their sustainability, empowering their people to drive change, and supporting customers to do the same.
The Västerås facility is an ABB Smart Power global center for R&D and manufacturing excellence for contactors, soft starters, pilot devices, machine safety products and arc guard systems. Each year, more than 1 million of these products, which make electricity reliable, efficient and safe to use, are produced at the site.
"At our site in Västerås, we’re doing everything we can to achieve net zero in our operations – we all want to be proud of the environmental footprint we leave to future generations. The whole team is engaged in the process, coming up with improvement ideas and looking at the ABB Ability™ Energy Manager data to see where we should act next. The collaboration between shopfloor teams and our sustainability program leaders is outstanding," says Linda Wennberg, HUB Division Manager for Central Europe and Manufacturing Unit Manager in Västerås, ABB Smart Power.

Renewable energy generation takes place on site with 584 PV panels meeting 7% of the site's total energy demand. Integration into the local district heating system, which is more efficient than central heating, contributes to further energy savings during Sweden’s cold winter months. Smart energy solutions, such as automated HVAC and motion sensor LED lighting, are installed throughout the building.
Continuous investment in automation and digitalization has contributed to year-on-year productivity and energy efficiency improvements. The site consumes 37% (1898 MWh) less energy than in 2019.
Ideas often come from the shopfloor: an employee sustainability group from across the organization has generated dozens of successful ideas since its inception in 2022, including making e-bikes available for employees, investing in energy efficient compressors, and reprogramming and replacing ventilation fans with 20% of the original energy usage. The site’s fleet is also fully electric with 18 EV charging stations available for employees, customers and visitors to charge their own vehicles.
