RB Kolubara - Technology saves a coal mine

The new high efficient low voltage ABB motors were installed in RB Kolubara – Tamnava West coalmine.

In May 2014, heavy rainfall filled the open-pit coal mine Tamnava with 187 million cubic meters of water. As coal is Serbia’s main energy source, quick action was vital to remove the water so that energy production could continue.

The three partners, ABB, RB Kolubara and MIKRO KONTROL, developed new measures to reconstruct the equipment and install new ABB machines and equipment to replace the ones that had been flooded in the floods.

“We have been working as one team since the beginning of the project,” says Radovan Maksimovic, coordinator of overhaul planning and electrical system maintenance at RB Kolubara.

ABB deliveries: 27 Process performance 500 kW motors, ACS880 Industrial drives, medium voltage switchgear, transformers.

Keys to success: long partnership, global presence, local support, energy efficient products.
