Container data center operator optimizes efficiency with ABB Ability™ Energy Manager

ABB and Shinohara Electric of Japan are working on digital energy management for containerized data centers that combine scalability, energy savings and lights-out management.

Founded in 1961, Shinohara Electric is a leading developer of electrical distribution equipment for Japan, ASEAN and the US. The company plays a growing role in electric vehicle charging, renewables, LED applications, and data centers. To help customers improve their digital resilience, Shinohara supplies completely custom-made container data centers, offering a reliable, energy-efficient solution that is cost-effective to build and operate.

Demand for containerized data centers is growing as organizations balance use of the cloud with on-site facilities for enhanced security and low latency. Containerization also allows organizations to install capacity customized to their specific needs, often with shorter lead times and higher energy efficiency. While construction of a conventional data center facility can take two to three years to complete, containerized data centers can be designed and installed in around ten months.

Shinichi Saikawa, executive director and general manager of Shinohara Electric’s IT Solutions Division said: “Containerized data centers must manage power consumption and be efficient to operate. ABB Ability™ Energy Manager makes it simple to systematically monitor and track energy, giving us clear and practical information to help optimize consumption. Anyone can install and operate it.”

Yoshito Aoita, Marketing & Sales Director, ABB Electrification, said: "The growing demand for container data centers and energy efficiency is inspiring new avenues for collaboration and innovation. We’re dedicated to helping customers achieve complete transparency in their energy data. The advantage of ABB Ability™ Energy Manager is its scalability and speed: it enables organizations to start small and identifies energy-saving opportunities in real time.”

Installation is simple. Shinohara Electric's data center system connects using an ABB SCU 100 control unit, M4M network analyzer, and power meters. This solution allows remote real-time monitoring of key system parameters.

ABB Ability™ Energy Manager also provides improved safety and reliability for IT equipment, optimizing asset allocation, and supporting data centers to operate smarter and more efficiently. A subscription model makes it easy for users to select the right functionality for their specific needs.
