Imagine a world free from smog-filled cities, melting glaciers, and extreme weather. A world powered by clean, renewable energy. It's a future that is within our grasp, and the mining industry holds the key.

I say it holds the key because the future of this planet may hinge on modern mining. As the world shifts towards low carbon, the demand for minerals and metals will skyrocket. Lithium, cobalt, and nickel will be highly sought after, and mining must provide a sustainable supply to meet demand.

It’s not wishful thinking; I truly believe the mining industry can get there. In fact, I believe the decarbonization of mining will be seen as one of the great achievements of this century.

To get a sense of what other industry experts are thinking, we at ABB surveyed or interviewed 412 mining executives from across 18 countries. Our research uncovered where the mining industry is at now and how technology can help power sustainability and change.

Tomorrow’s miner

So how does the industry go about making this huge shift? How does it reduce its environmental impact, minimize risks, achieve economic growth, improve the lives of local communities, and equip workers with the skills necessary for the future of mining?

These are some big questions, and I believe technology has the answers. As it happens, I’m not alone. 70% of our respondents said they believe they can achieve significant decarbonization using technologies available today.

However, the problem of decarbonization also requires a new mindset. Tomorrow's miner must be tech-savvy, sustainable-minded, collaborative, and a lifelong learner.

But this is not a switch that you just flick. It needs to be introduced gradually. A step-by-step evolution which is already fully under way. Our research illustrated the change:

  • 42% of our respondents said they plan to invest in the decarbonization of their haulage fleet by 2026
  • 68% are planning to electrify at least 25% of their fleets by 2030
  • 76% consider vehicle electrification as having the greatest potential to increase the efficiency and sustainability of mining operations

These numbers are encouraging. Electrifying vehicles can be a meaningful first step with many benefits that go beyond the reduction of CO2 emissions.

Ventilation is another area ripe for transformation. 74% of our respondents said they see ventilation solutions as having the greatest potential to increase the efficiency and sustainability of their mining operations. And 50% reported prioritizing innovation in ventilation over the next 5 years.

By automating ventilation systems, mining teams can avoid the waste of ventilating underground mines 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Mining needs to catch up

When it comes to digitalization, the industry cannot afford to ignore the power of digital. Mining is already lagging behind other sectors such as automotive and chemicals when it comes to digital maturity.

It's a crucial step. Not only for decarbonization but also for improving efficiency and reducing costs. For example, digital sensors and monitoring solutions can help analyze and optimize energy use. A connected workforce can also warn other teams of potential dangers and quickly request help.

Digital tools can streamline supply chains, reduce lead times, and improve inventory management, leading to cost savings and increased efficiency. And data analytics and artificial intelligence can provide valuable insights into operations, allowing for more informed decision-making and optimized resource allocation.

The persona of the traditional miner is already disappearing into history. They are being replaced by the tech-savvy, digital native. Armed with cutting-edge digital tools and a deep understanding of sustainability, they will further lead the mining industry into a whole new era.

A helping hand

One last point. If you’re on this journey but you’re getting lost in the maze or feel like you’re hitting a wall, why not seek out some expert advice? Find someone who can provide the guidance and support you need, then go and ask questions and pick their brains. By working together, you can overcome the barriers and set your mining company up for a successful future.
