On November 18, 2024, the HyPilot project officially launched at the Kårstø Gas Processing Plant in Rogaland, Norway, marking a key step in the evolution of green hydrogen technologies. This field pilot, hosted at Equinor’s K-Lab test center, integrates Hystar’s 1.5 MW containerized PEM electrolyzer, designed to operate efficiently with intermittent renewable energy sources.

The project will provide performance data from various operating regimes, including intermittent power supply, offering valuable insights for ABB, to support the development of next-generation power supply solutions. The opening event brought together industry and government leaders, including Norwegian Energy Minister Terje Aasland, and representatives from ABB, Hystar, Yara Clean Ammonia, Gassco, Equinor, and Enova. The collaboration among these key players reflects the shared commitment to advancing green hydrogen as a viable energy solution.
Participating in the HyPilot project allows us to fully explore the potential for efficiency and control in the next generation of power supplies. By integrating ABB’s advanced power solutions with Hystar’s innovative electrolyser technology, we are uncovering new efficient pathways for hydrogen generation by refining the interplay between electrochemistry and electrical engineering. This collaboration will help meet the growing global demand for economically viable green hydrogen production. - Chris Poynter, Division President, ABB System Drives
