Hebei Jiheng Pharmaceutical Company reduces its downtime by 50% and maintenance costs by 40% with ABB condition-based maintenance

Hebei Jiheng Pharmaceutical Company boosted the efficiency and quality of its wastewater processing and increased the uptime of its wastewater pumps with the help of remote condition monitoring and recovery services bundled in an ABB Motion OneCare service agreement. As a result, the entire pharmaceutical plant can now operate smoothly at maximum capacity.

Hebei Jiheng Pharmaceutical Company Limited is located in Hengshui City, around 250 kilometers south of Beijing, China. Products include painkillers, vitamin supplements, and pharmaceutical intermediates.

The company was looking to improve the stability of its production line, by enhancing the reliability of the mechanical vapor recompression (MVR) equipment in the wastewater pumping application, which is powered by ten motors. The MVR process recovers and reuses energy normally lost through evaporation thus increasing efficiency and saving energy. In the past years, it has experienced downtime due to the circuit board erosion of the MV drives controlling them.

Hebei Jiheng Pharmaceutical Company turned to ABB to help resolve the problem. To maximize their uptime, ABB proposed a solution for improved maintenance, including a bundle of services such as repair services, and remote digital monitoring for two of their drives, and ten motors, delivered through a Motion OneCare agreement. Under the service agreement, all the issues were identified on time and continuous and reliable operations were subsequently enabled.

Fast and easy access to effective services

By shifting from routine scheduled maintenance to condition-based maintenance, which considers monitoring equipment to determine what needs fixing and when, the customer has eliminated unexpected maintenance costs and reduced their annual equipment maintenance expenses by 40%.

The condition-based maintenance was possible through the customized service agreement, under which, ABB engineers provide remote and on-site support, which significantly improved response times. As a result, the uptime rate was boosted from around 80% to more than 90%. More stable operation has increased the efficiency and quality of the wastewater treatment process by 10%. This means the factory can now run at full capacity, maximizing the company’s revenues.

“ABB provides us with the needed services and the experts that keep our equipment operating reliably and efficiently,” says Xiaowei Liu, Electrical Director, Hebei Jiheng Pharmaceutical Company. “This is very important for the smooth production of our factory. We had a great experience cooperating with ABB on this project, and we look forward to further collaboration in the future.”

Zhixin Deng, Services Local Division Manager, ABB Motion, China, states: “This case shows how digital solutions can help customers reduce unplanned production stops and improve uptime. Our Motion OneCare agreements allow customers to tailor the services they need according to actual situations, improving uptime while reducing maintenance cost.”
