In the ABB Dalmine factory in Italy on 29 January ABB and the University of Bergamo signed the framework agreement defining the strategic lines of a collaboration.

The agreement, focused on educational research, training, and guidance to strengthen the mutual exchange of resources, skills, and knowledge, is developed in 360° thematic areas, ranging from sustainability to DEI issues, passing through advanced technologies and artificial intelligence.

The partnership between ABB and the university, which began in 2015 with an initial collaboration agreement, was therefore crowned by this act which, in addition to representing a significant step towards innovation and technological development, further strengthens the link between ABB and the Bergamo area. Since the foundation of the historic SACE in 1934, acquired by ABB in 1988, the company has always been strongly linked to the Bergamo area to which it owes its origins and which today sees it present with the Bergamo and Dalmine sites, two leading companies of the ABB group and important importance in the Italian industrial landscape.

Present at the signing of the agreement were the two representatives of the institutions: Prof. Sergio Cavalieri as Rector of the University and Simona Alberini as President of ABB Italia.

"We are excited to strengthen the collaboration with the University of Bergamo in ambitious and innovative projects," said Simona Alberini, President of ABB Italia "This agreement will not only help develop knowledge and research in key areas such as electrical engineering and electronics and in segments that underpin future developments such as artificial intelligence, but it will allow us to identify and develop new talents ready to face the challenges of the future. In addition, ABB and the University will be able to join efforts to promote diversity, equity and inclusion, themes to which ABB is firmly dedicated."

"The multi-year collaboration with ABB on the issues of innovation of products, production processes and services – explained Sergio Cavalieri, Rector of the University of Bergamo – represents a fundamental pillar of our commitment to experiential and future-oriented teaching. This agreement allows us to strengthen the synergy with an industrial partner of excellence to create joint labs and educational laboratories that enrich the training experience of our students, not only in engineering courses. In addition, new perspectives are opening up to promote forms of active guidance, helping young people to plan their professional futures with concrete and innovative tools. The impetus towards new projects on the themes of twin transition and artificial intelligence testifies to the shared desire to trace the trajectories of innovation together, focusing on the people and skills necessary to face global challenges".

The first act that arises from this collaboration between ABB and UniBg is the establishment of the ABB SACE scholarship, a project that for 2025 will feature two students from the Departments of Engineering and Applied Sciences and Management, Information and Production Engineering, who will have the opportunity to spend a 6-month internship period at ABB, developing a thesis project with a focus on sustainability.

This collaboration is part of a consolidated relationship that ABB Italia has with the main Italian universities with projects related to innovation and in recent years to the development of skills in STEM disciplines.

The two selected students will be placed in the Bergamo and Dalmine campuses and supported by teams of ABB experts who will support them in the drafting of the thesis project.
