ABB releases upgrade to Operator Wellbeing Service to improve air quality and health in control rooms

ABB has added a new feature, Personal Air Purifier (PAP), to its Operator Wellbeing Service (OWS)1, to improve air quality and improve the wellbeing and comfort of operators in control room environments. It is one of the first solution for control room environment to address PH1 particles which can cause serious respiratory diseases such as asthma, pneumonia and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).

Validating and optimizing control room conditions such as temperature, lighting, noise and air quality, ABB’ s recently launched OWS digital solution improves the wellbeing of industrial operators and helps ensure compliance with ISO 11064 guidelines on control center design.

The PAP is fully compatible with Extended Operator Workplace (EOW)-i and EOW-x workstation models. Customers who already operate ABB’s flagship 800xA distributed control system (DCS) can effortlessly integrate the PAP as an additional accessory to all EOW-x and EOW-i models from 2015 forward.

Studies show that indoor air can be up to 50 times more polluted than ambient air. Most offices use filters to improve air quality, but these often only remove PM2.5–PM10 particles such as dust and smoke, neglecting more serious PM1 combustion particles, bacteria and viruses2. Globally, air pollution is one of the greatest environmental risks to personal health and the second-highest risk factor for noncommunicable diseases (those not passed from person to person). It also causes 6.7 million premature deaths annually3 and costs billions in lost productivity and medical care.

PM1-classed in accordance with the ISO 16890 standard, the Personal Air Purifier (PAP) quietly and efficiently removes up to 60 percent of all PM1 dust and as much as 85 percent of all bacteria, contributing to a healthier work environment and reducing absenteeism.
