ABB, a global technology leader in automation and electrification, has officially launched the Ethernet-APL + PROFINET Application Technology Joint Laboratory in Beijing in collaboration with the Instrumentation Technology and Economy Institute (ITEI). This new smart industrial communication partnership has the goal of accelerating the standardization and large-scale deployment of Ethernet-APL technology in the Chinese market.

During a launch event in April, senior attendees who inaugurated the laboratory included Ouyang Jinsong, Director of the ITEI, Liu Dan, Assistant to the Director and Deputy Chief Engineer of the ITEI, Anders Maltesen, President, ABB Energy Industries for Asia, and Fan Xiaopeng, VP, ABB Energy Industries in China.

As China experiences a significant industrial transformation fueled by the principles of Industry 4.0, which emphasizes digitalization, automation and smart manufacturing, the adoption of advanced technologies like Ethernet-APL will be central to the continued transformation. Ethernet-APL enables industries across China to enhance productivity and quality through improved automation and data analytics. It supports better grid management in the energy sector and boosts operational efficiency in process operations.

“We are committed to shaping the future of industrial automation by collaborating on a robust Ethernet-APL ecosystem, one that empowers smarter, safer and more connected operations across the industry,” said Anders Maltesen, President of ABB Energy Industries in Asia “We believe the acceleration of automation and smart development in process industries, led by Ethernet-APL, is set to usher us into an era of autonomous operations. This will not only boost production efficiency and safety but contribute to a low carbon society in China.”

“Standardizing industrial communication technology is pivotal for strategic industrial advancements. Through our collaboration with ABB, we are strategically positioned to provide a leading testing and verification environment,” said Ouyang Jinsong, Director of the ITEI. “This partnership will accelerate technological upgrades and product innovation for domestic enterprises. Together, we aim to fast-track the implementation of Ethernet-APL technology, driving forward China’s smart industrial transformation.”

The Ethernet-APL + PROFINET Application Technology Joint Laboratory will focus on delivering a range of services and functions. In particular, the facility will provide compatibility testing services for products based on Ethernet-APL and PROFINET protocols to ensure that equipment meets international standards and enhance products’ competitiveness in the market. It will also serve as a technology display platform, showcasing advanced technologies such as Ethernet-APL, PROFINET, FDI, and OPC UA to enterprise customers and industry experts, as well as providing relevant training services to help upskill the local ecosystem. Additionally, the laboratory will support the adoption and application of Ethernet-APL through technology promotion and exchange, including activities such as technical seminars and industry forums.

The integration of advanced technologies like Ethernet-APL and PROFINET is anticipated to significantly contribute to China's industrial future. According to market forecasts, China's industrial automation market is expected to see growth at a CAGR of 8.7 percent between 2022 to 2027, driven by increased demand for efficient and more sustainable industrial solutions. By fostering the adoption of next-generation technologies, ABB aims to enhance productivity, safety and sustainability in key sectors such as chemicals and pharmaceuticals. This initiative aligns with the broader goal of accelerating China's smart industrial transformation and securing its position as a leader in global industrial innovation.
