To improve alarm visibility for better targeting of its alarm priorities, the Trans Anatolian Natural Gas Pipeline Company (TANAP) in Türkiye decided last year to install ABB’s AlarmInsight® system. The system is designed to reduce the overall alarm load and nuisance alarms, based on priorities set by the operations teams, allowing operators to respond to the most critical alarms first.
AlarmInsight, which is easy to implement on any installed DCS base, gives much wider alarm visibility to more key people to help them make improvements on three crucial functions: alarm analysis; alarm rationalization; and KPI reporting. By linking AlarmInsight to TANAP’s control systems, which controls and supervises a 1,811.7 km gas pipeline and all above ground installations including metering and compressor stations, the TANAP Operation Team can prioritize alarm rationalization at key areas in a much more effective and robust manner which helps to maintain smooth pipeline operation.

Manufacturing Operations Management software visualizes critical processes
As part of the alarm project, TANAP also installed ABB’s Manufacturing Operations Management (MOM) software, which allows the operations team to better visualize the critical process areas with custom dashboards. MOM allows TANAP to display and track trends, using the data historian, for key variables such as flow rates, pressures and temperatures depending on the specific needs of that area.
Ariel Zarshat, ABB’s Technical Account Manager for the TANAP project, explains the challenges addressed: “TANAP had a very large volume of alarms and wanted to be able to filter them so they could direct their resources and responses in a much more effective way. This tool enables more TANAP employees from various disciplines to analyze and target the pipeline processes from their own perspective, letting them prioritize and rationalize alarms, and perhaps remove those not needed. Ultimately, this increased visibility helps them transform raw alarm and event data, in a focused manner, into meaningful insight that improves decision making regarding the operation of their processes.”
“Outstanding service award 2024” recognized by TANAP to ABB
TANAP explains their adoption of the technology: “We chose AlarmInsight, so-called ALMAS in TANAP, for its ability to focus on real challenges, reduce manual intervention and associated risks, and promote broader team collaboration through its centralized alarm management platform.”
For such a project, TANAP awarded ABB with the Outstanding Service Award.“This recognition makes us very proud. Seeing that our team’s efforts and our company’s solutions resonate so positively at the customers’ end motivates us even harder to achieve more,” commented Baris Unver, Division Manager at ABB Energy Industries in Türkiye.
The installation project started in July 2024 and was completed at the end of 2024.
