ABB Energy Industries recently concluded the PETRONAS Industrial Cybersecurity End-User Roundtable (PINCER)-ABB OT Cyber Security Risk Assessment Workshop, a focused two-day program designed to strengthen operational technology (OT) cyber security risk assessment capabilities across Malaysia’s critical industries.
Held in collaboration with PINCER, the workshop brought together over 60 professionals from key sectors including oil and gas, power generation, utilities, and maritime. Attendees ranged from cyber security experts and instrumentation engineers to operations leads and IT/OT specialists — all committed to enhancing the resilience of critical infrastructure.
Representatives from leading organizations such as PETRONAS, TNB Genco & ICT, SEB, Vopak, ExxonMobil, MODEC and Shell participated, highlighting the growing urgency across industries to advance OT cyber security maturity and safeguard essential services in today’s connected industrial landscape.
Hands-on approach to OT cyber security
More than a seminar, the workshop was an engaging experience applying internationally recognized standards, particularly IEC 62443, in real-world industrial contexts.
Participants engaged in interactive exercises, case studies, and expert discussions to develop practical skills in identifying, assessing, and mitigating cyber security risks. The program emphasized a risk-based approach tailored to the operational challenges of critical infrastructure, enabling attendees to prioritize controls effectively while aligning with key OT priorities such as safety, reliability, and availability. The activities in the workshop also threw light on remediation practices, prioritizing countermeasures while effectively balancing the cost versus risk equation, which is a key challenge for asset owners.
This practical approach equipped participants with actionable insights to enhance their organizations’ cyber resilience, reinforcing ABB’s commitment to secure, sustainable, and high-performing operations in Malaysia’s key industries.
Showcasing ABB’s role as a trusted cyber security partner
The event also highlighted ABB’s expertise in delivering risk-based OT cyber security solutions that are compliant, scalable, and aligned with industry needs. It reinforced ABB’s role as a trusted partner with deep domain knowledge, dedicated to helping customers strengthen their cyber defenses.
Collaboration with local stakeholders and regulatory bodies was a key focus. ABB continues to work closely with industry leaders and authorities to support secure digitalization and ensure compliance with evolving regulations.
The workshop provided a valuable platform for participants to benchmark their cyber security practices, explore emerging threats, and build internal capabilities to respond to evolving risks.
As industrial cyber threats grow in complexity, ABB remains committed to empowering customers with the tools, knowledge and support needed to build cyber-resilient operations. This workshop is a key milestone in our strategy to advance cyber security awareness and maturity across Southeast Asia’s critical infrastructure.
