ABB Canada marked a major milestone on August 27 with the official groundbreaking of our new 340,000-square-foot manufacturing and R&D facility in the South Shore of Montreal, Quebec.
Why it matters : As announced earlier this month, this investment of over $130 million CAD represents ABB’s largest investment in Canada to date and will support local innovation in electrical manufacturing.
Building together the future of Canada
At the event, Mike Shenouda, Canada Region Leader for ABB Installation Products Division, welcomed guests to what will be a state-of-the-art facility. He highlighted the many people and organizations who participated in the groundbreaking:
A commitment on many levels
- ABB leadership team, including Khalid Mandri, President for ABB Installation Products
- Government representatives: Louis Lemieux, member of parlement for Saint-Jean and Audrey Bogemans, member of parlement for Iberville.
- City of Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu officials, including the mayor, Andrée Bouchard.
- Minister of Economy, Energy and Innovation representatives for Investissement Québec’s financial support.
- Valuable customers and distribution partners whom we are looking to grow with further in Canada

The new facility, set to open in mid 2027, will combine ABB’s existing operations in Iberville and Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu and reflects ABB’s commitment on multiple fronts:
- Our commitment to grow in Canada. Expanding ABB’s capabilities and capacity to deliver Canadian-made products and solutions to meet increasing electrification demands.
- Our commitment to the local community. ABB has proudly operated in Canada for over 100 years. This new facility strengthens our local presence in Quebec as a top employer and manufacturer in Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu.
- Our commitment to our people. It is designed to retain over 600 employees and to ensure continuity by remaining in the South Shore area of Montreal. With rising electricity demand, we expect to grow and expand operations, hiring additional talent over time to support that growth.
- Our commitment to innovation. The new facility will house our R&D team, as well as incorporate advanced production automation and digital technologies to be at the forefront of electrification solutions.
- Our commitment to our customers and partners – who are at the heart of everything we do.
Powering the energy transition
Khalid Mandri, President of ABB Installation Products, highlighted the broader context for this investment: the accelerating energy transition.
“While ABB has been in Canada for over a century, the ways in which we use electricity has changed... and demand continues to grow. The energy transition is accelerating — and with it, the demand for safe, reliable and locally manufactured electrical solutions has never been greater. These are the solutions that keep our world moving: modernizing aging infrastructure, reducing emissions, restoring power faster after storms, and keeping our grids strong and resilient.”

Looking ahead
As the groundbreaking concluded, the excitement was clear: this was not just the start of a construction project — it was the start of a new chapter in ABB’s Canadian story.
Here’s to growth, innovation, and building the future of Canada — together. Let the construction begin!
