ABB's automation solutions modernize water management infrastructure at UNESCO World Heritage site in Greece

ABB's automation technology is modernizing the water infrastructure and enabling more sustainable resource management in Zagori, a remote rural landscape in northwestern Greece.

The Municipality of Zagori, located in the heart of the Pindus Mountains is known for its traditional stone villages, pristine natural environment and unique architectural heritage. This mountainous region is collaborating with ABB to automate its water management infrastructure.

Recognizing the critical importance of efficient water resource management in this UNESCO World Heritage area, Zagori Municipality awarded ABB two contracts to modernize their water supply systems through advanced automation solutions.

Advanced automation implementation

The orders, signed in July 2024, cover complementary aspects of water infrastructure automation. The integrated solution combines remote monitoring and control systems with advanced management capabilities. The project encompasses the installation of 31 control and monitoring stations across the municipality's water network, featuring SCADA telemetry systems, programmable logic controllers, high-efficiency pumping systems, and comprehensive water quality monitoring equipment.

Technology at the heart of transformation

"We are proud to support Zagori Municipality in implementing these leading solutions that will transform their water management capabilities," said Michalis Kanellopoulos, Sales Manager at ABB’s Energy Industries division in Greece. "Our integrated approach combines automated monitoring with environmental protection to create a more sustainable water management system that meets the specific demands of this region."

The implementation leverages ABB's portfolio of advanced automation technologies, integrating SCADA systems for centralized monitoring with precision electromagnetic flowmeters and variable frequency drives for pump optimization. The entire system is built on reliable PLC-based automation platforms that provide robust, real-time control throughout the water infrastructure.

Benefits for a protected environment

As Mayor of Zagori Municipality Georgios Soukouvelos emphasizes: "The implementation of these strategically important projects will mark a new era for our municipality's water infrastructure. Through the application of modern remote-control technologies, we will provide better services to our citizens, protect the environment, and achieve a significant reduction in operational costs."

The automation systems will optimize water resource utilization through sophisticated leak detection and improved distribution efficiency, while enhanced water quality monitoring systems provide continuous monitoring and data collection. Intelligent control systems will improve operational efficiency and strengthen environmental protection measures.

The projects are particularly significant given Zagori's status as a UNESCO World Heritage area of exceptional natural and cultural value. The region's 46 traditional villages, connected by ancient stone bridges and surrounded by pristine forests, attract nature enthusiasts and tourists from around the world.

"This automation transformation allows us to preserve our natural heritage while providing modern, reliable services," noted Mayor Georgios Soukouvelos. "The systems will help us balance the needs of our permanent residents with the requirements of sustainable tourism development."

The projects are currently in the implementation phase, with completion scheduled for 2026-2027. ABB's comprehensive approach includes equipment supply, installation, extensive staff training, and ongoing support to ensure optimal performance.

John Kokotos, Local Division Manager at ABB Energy Industries, notes: "These projects demonstrate ABB's commitment to supporting Greek municipalities in their automation journey. By combining our automation expertise with advanced monitoring solutions, we're helping create more resilient and sustainable water infrastructures."
