Keppel Merlimau Cogen (KMC) successfully upgraded its legacy turbine control system Egatrol 8 to Egatrol X, which is based on the ABB Ability™ System 800xA® flagship distributed control system (DCS) and modern AC800M portfolio.
Technical Precision and Data Integrity
A successful upgrade requires careful planning to limit outages and ensure system integrity. Panchanathan Arungulavan, Senior Manager at Keppel Infrastructure, highlighted the need for seamless data management and conversion, as well as safeguarding historical parameters.
ABB, having technical familiarity with the original system was selected for this project. ABB's solution focused on risk reduction by including a custom-designed conversion tool to minimise human error during data transfer and guaranteeing full system interoperability.
Adaptability and Collaboration
Success was secured through mutual trust and high-level collaboration between the Keppel and ABB teams. This partnership allowed for swift and informed decision-making throughout the commissioning phase. The project was further supported by ABB's robust 24/7 support, ensuring all aspects of the new control system were optimized for reliable performance. This proactive, collaborative approach is a model for executing complex critical infrastructure upgrades.
Long-Term Impact and Stability
The control system modernization positions KMC for enhanced reliability and aligns its operations with the latest industry standards in digitalization. The new platform provides substantial long-term benefits in reliability, cybersecurity and efficiency.
The successful transition demonstrates KMC's commitment to maintaining Singapore's power reliability through advanced technology and strong, focused partnership.
