ABB accelerates its journey toward net-zero with enhanced energy management in Korea

• ABB advances its global Sustainability Agenda through energy-efficient operations and data-driven management practices

• Korea’s Cheonan site earns ISO 50001 certification, marking another step in ABB’s journey toward its 2050 net-zero target.

• The certification recognizes ABB’s structured approach to improving energy performance and reducing GHG emissions by 65% compared with 2021 levels in Cheonan site

ABB, a global technology leader in electrification and automation, has earned ISO 50001 certification for its Cheonan site in Korea. Recognized as a continued implementation of energy management standards across the company , this milestone reinforces ABB’s global leadership in sustainable operations and supports its long-term goal of achieving net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050.

ISO 50001, the international standard for energy management systems, provides a structured framework for improving energy efficiency and reducing emissions. The certification was achieved as part of ABB’s global Sustainability Agenda, which aims to enable a low-carbon society by enhancing efficiency across its own operations, collaborating with suppliers to reduce their emissions, and helping customers lower their carbon footprint through ABB technologies.

The certification highlights ABB’s structured and data-driven approach to monitoring, managing, and optimizing energy use at its Cheonan site. Aligned with the Group’s global energy efficiency strategy and net zero roadmap, the Cheonan site has implemented a comprehensive energy management system, optimized facilities, and provided regular employee training — achieving a 65 percent reduction in greenhouse gas emissions from its operation compared with 2021 levels.

Since its establishment in 1998, the Cheonan site has been integral to ABB’s sustainability journey, driving initiatives that align with the company’s global vision. In 2023, it installed an on-site solar power system that now supplies more than half of its annual electricity needs, significantly reducing both energy costs and emissions. The facility has also deployed ABB electric-vehicle chargers, offering free charging for employees and visitors to promote clean mobility. With this achievement, the Cheonan site now holds major international management system certifications: ISO 50001 (energy management), ISO 9001 (quality management), and ISO 14001 (environmental management) /45001 (occupational health and safety management).

“Earning ISO 50001 certification demonstrates ABB’s firm commitment to sustainable energy management and operational excellence,” said June-Ho Choi, Country Holding Officer of ABB Korea. “This milestone reflects our leadership in advancing energy efficiency and our ongoing commitment to integrating sustainability into every aspect of our operations.”

ABB plans to continue translating its global sustainability strategy into tangible results across operations, contributing both to Korea’s carbon neutrality goals and to ABB’s broader ambition of building a more sustainable, resource-efficient future.
