ABB and Kyoritsu Denki Seisakusyo announce strategic collaboration to strengthen RMU supply in Japan

ABB has entered into a strategic channel partner agreement with Kabushiki Kaisha Kyoritsu Denki Seisakusyo to accelerate the local supply and support of ABB’s SafeRing/SafePlus Ring Main Units (RMUs) – a type of medium-voltage switchgear for secondary distribution – in Japan. This collaboration is designed to meet growing demand from industries such as manufacturing, renewable energy, data centers, and commercial infrastructure. Ring Main Units - compact, modular switchgear used in looped network configurations – play a critical role in ensuring reliable power distribution, protection, and isolation.

As Japan experiences a surge in large-scale facility development, the partnership aims to deliver RMUs with short lead times, high safety standards, and proven reliability - backed by robust after-sales service. This will contribute to a stable power supply and optimized power systems for key sectors, supporting businesses that aim to stay ahead in a rapidly evolving energy landscape.

Under the agreement, ABB will manufacture and assemble the core components of its SafeRing/ SafePlus RMUs, while Kyoritsu Denki Seisakusyo will take the lead on engineering, final assembly, pre-shipment testing, sales, and service. Kyoritsu Denki Seisakusyo is a leading Japan-based panel builder and engineering-solutions provider specializing in medium- and low-voltage electrical systems. This division of responsibilities is designed to accelerate market access and localized support for Japanese customers.

Mr. Mitsutomo Mera, CEO of Kyoritsu Denki Seisakusyo said:

“We are proud to collaborate with ABB to bring these RMUs to the Japanese market. With our engineering expertise and deep understanding of customer needs, we aim to deliver high-quality, reliable solutions with fast turnaround times. This partnership enables us to support Japan’s evolving energy infrastructure and help our customers stay ahead with dependable, future-ready solutions.”

Masayasu Ishikawa, Commercial Leader of Electrification at ABB said: "Our RMUs have already earned strong recognition in Japan for their reliability and delivery speed across manufacturing sites, renewable installations, and data centers. Partnering with Kyoritsu Denki Seisakusyo – a company with deep expertise and extensive experience of distribution solutions - allows us to expand our domestic assembly capabilities to meet the growing demand from key industries."

This partnership marks the beginning of deeper collaboration between the two companies, with plans to further expand Kyoritsu Denki Seisakusyo's capabilities and switchgear portfolio.

Solutions in focus: ABB’s SafeRing/SafePlus Ring Main Units

ABB's SafeRing/SafePlus are modular, gas-insulated RMUs designed for secondary distribution, at rated voltages of 12-24 kV. These RMUs are composed of 10 types of modules that incorporate circuit breakers, switches, fuses, and other components. Their flexible design supports a wide range of applications, while compact dimensions and low maintenance requirements help reduce installation space and lifecycle costs. Built to IEC standards and ISO9001-certified, they offer reliable performance in demanding environments.
