ABB’s 30 Years in Kazakhstan: Honoring the Past, Empowering the Future

This year marks ABB’s 30th anniversary in Kazakhstan – three decades defined by dedication, progress, and the people who shaped our journey. ABB in Kazakhstan has evolved in tandem with the nation’s diverse industries, spanning the mining, oil and gas, metallurgy, cement and infrastructure industries. The company is committed to advancing technology and fostering safer, smarter and more sustainable operations. Our mission remains clear: to help Kazakhstan’s industrial sectors unlock productivity, reliability and resilience through electrification, automation and digitalization.

Three Decades of Milestones

ABB’s presence in Kazakhstan dates back to 1992, when the company opened its first office in Almaty. Just a few years later, in 1995, ABB formally registered its legal entity, marking the true beginning of its long-term commitment to the region. Since then, ABB has expanded its role across Central Asia, supporting industrial transformation, energy modernization and the nation’s growing focus on sustainability.

Throughout its 30-year history, ABB Kazakhstan has achieved several major milestones:

  • 1992: ABB opens its first office in Almaty, marking the start of a long-term commitment to the Kazakhstan market
  • 1995: Formal registration of our legal entity establishes sustained operations and a local service presence
  • 2005: A dedicated service division is launched to expand installation, commissioning, and lifecycle support across mining and energy
  • 2017: ABB serves as a key electrical equipment supplier at Expo 2017 Astana, showcasing advanced electrification and automation solutions
  • 2020: Relocation to a modern office and the opening of ABB University Training Center in Almaty, with programs for ABB Ability™ System 800xA® distributed control system (DCS), low-voltage drives, relays and switchgear
  • 2021–2022: Local engineers gain global certifications; 24/7 remote service capabilities are introduced for Gearless Mill Drives (GMD) to support continuous operations in mining
  • 2025: ABB Kazakhstan’s 30-year anniversary is celebrated through industry engagements, customer seminars and community events

Today, ABB Kazakhstan is recognized as a regional leader representing ABB’s Process Industries division. Through this leadership, ABB operates across mining, oil and gas, cement, metallurgy, and smart infrastructure.

Anniversary Highlights and Industry Engagement

Our 30-year anniversary was celebrated not only within our walls but across Kazakhstan’s industrial ecosystem. Through participation in exhibitions, seminars and customer dialogues, we focused on innovation and domestic value creation.

Contribution at the Astana Mining & Metallurgy (AMM Congress 2025 showcased ABB’s technology leadership in mining and metallurgy, including digitalization, electrification and lifecycle services. ABB’s three-day Customer Innovation Seminar in Almaty spotlighted integrated solutions for mining, automation and digital operations.

To build enduring impact, ABB invests in skills, partnerships and hands-on learning. Our focus on youth development and education is shaping the future workforce for Kazakhstan’s industry. A modern automation laboratory was launched with AUES (Energo University), equipped with ABB technologies to enable practical engineering education aligned with industry needs. ABB’s internship program offers graduate students real-world experience in multi-national company working with real data and driven by the impact you make for the industry.

Sustainability is a core priority for ABB's operations in Kazakhstan. The Almaty office has achieved full redemption of its annual electricity consumption through I-REC certificates, ensuring all electrical power usage is offset by renewable energy sources. Building on this commitment, a dedicated team has expanded the office's waste management practices beyond the previous paper and battery recycling to now include plastic, aluminum, and glass, creating a more comprehensive recycling program.

Our achievements in Kazakhstan are powered by the creativity, dedication and teamwork of our people. We honor colleagues past and present whose contributions built our success and inspire our future. Trust, safety and continuous learning define our culture. ABB Kazakhstan Family Day 2025 engaged over 120 employees and their families, reinforcing connection and well-being. Participation in marathons and half marathons promotes a healthy lifestyle and team spirit. The ABB Kazakhstan Football Tournament 2025 brought together employees, partners, and customers, strengthening community ties through friendly competition.

30 Years Anniversary Celebration

The highlight of 2025 occurred on November 24, the anniversary of when ABB officially registered its legal entity in Kazakhstan. During the following week, ABB hosted a special evening, an anniversary gala dinner attended by all current employees.

The celebration was warm, nostalgic, and filled with personal stories. Employees participated in a story-guessing activity where colleagues tried to identify whose memories were being shared and in in interactive quiz about ABB’s history globally and in Kazakhstan. One of the most symbolic moments of the evening was the creation of a time capsule. Every employee wrote a heartfelt message with their best wishes for ABB’s future in the Kazakhstan market. The capsule, sealed with a timer, will be opened five years later—during the 35th anniversary—and will be kept by ABB General Director - Natalija Gromova - until that day.

“Today we celebrate an important milestone — 30 years of ABB in Kazakhstan. Three decades of progress, growth, and forward motion,” with that sentence Natalija Gromova, General Director of ABB Kazakhstan, started her speech. “ABB is like a locomotive — alive, powerful, and confidently accelerating into the future. Together, we are one coordinated machine, moving along the tracks of our corporate values. And this locomotive is strong enough to celebrate not only 30 — but also 50 and even 100 years ahead.”
