Ensuring uninterrupted care: ABB's role in Baden Hospital's new era

The new Baden Cantonal Hospital (KSB) building marks a significant milestone in healthcare infrastructure. The cantonal hospital in Baden-Dättwil was opened in 1978 and is affectionately nicknamed “Agnes” - a name that dates to Queen Agnes of Hungary who first opened a hospital in the area in 1349.

The hospital has undertaken six years of construction and ABB has provided medium and low-voltage distribution boards and systems and uninterruptible power supplies ensuring a reliable supply of electrical energy.

When reliability is non-negotiable, ABB's Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) systems are powering industries across the globe, ensuring uninterrupted operations in the face of the unexpected. For Baden Hospital, ensuring constant power supply was critical to not only avoid costly downtime and maintain service excellence, but to also ensure patient safety.

“A power cut can be destructive for most businesses but in a hospital, a power cut can have devastating and often fatal consequences. It can put patient lives in jeopardy in areas such as the operating theatre or intensive care,” said Daniel Anderegg, Head of Technical Services at Baden Cantonal Hospital (KSB) “Baden Hospital had (UPS) systems installed by ABB for this purpose.”

ABB's solutions ensure that the hospital is equipped with redundant medium and low-voltage distribution systems. This means that in the event of a power failure, one UPS system can seamlessly take over, maintaining power for up to 20 minutes while emergency generators are activated. The design includes three separate low-voltage grids for normal, uninterruptible, and safety power supplies, ensuring comprehensive coverage against power failures.

“ABB's collaboration with Baden Cantonal Hospital exemplifies our commitment to innovating for a sustainable future,” said Sébastien Surply, Head of Critical Power, ABB Electrification.  “By ensuring reliable and efficient power supply solutions, we not only protect lives but also contribute to a zero-carbon future. Our partnership with KSB reflects our dedication to creating an unbeatable customer experience, where their success is our success.”

In the face of potential power disruptions, the KSB has implemented ABB's modular UPS DPA 250 S4 systems, featuring two sets of four units with five 50-kilowatt modules each. This setup not only guarantees uninterrupted power supply but also enhances operational reliability, which is crucial for the hospital's operating theaters and intensive care units. With an impressive efficiency of 97.6%, these UPS systems are among the most efficient on the market, aligning with KSB's sustainability goals.

Should the power fail sufficient batteries are installed in each of the two UPS systems to guarantee the overall supply to the KSB for up to 20 minutes. "That is a large safety margin. In this case, the three diesel generators of our emergency power system would start up and take over the power supply within 15 to 30 seconds," Anderegg calculates. There is enough fuel in stock at the site to operate the emergency power system for a full month. "A blackout test at the beginning of January worked to our complete satisfaction," emphasizes Anderegg.

ABB remains at the forefront of power solutions, driving customer success through innovative technologies and a dedication to building resilient industries across the globe.
