Celebrating Innovators Driving Impact at ABB Canada

At ABB, innovation begins with people — with women whose curiosity, expertise and purpose move technology forward. On this International Day of Women and Girls in Science, we spotlight ten women who represent countless others. Their stories reflect the brilliance, resilience, and impact of the women who contribute to ABB’s success every day.

Curiosity: The Spark that Starts a STEM Journey

For many of these leaders, STEM began with a single instinct: curiosity. Jade Jarrett, Application Engineer, describes early sciences as standing “on the edge of new knowledge,” where exploration fuels discovery. “Math, science, and technology always came naturally to me — I loved exploring ideas to uncover something new.” Curiosity also guided Samirath Bouraima, Head of Service Operations. “My fascination with everyday technologies naturally drew me toward STEM,” she shares. Meeting ABB engineers during her studies revealed how technical expertise can create real world impact.

With nearly 35 years at ABB, Engineering Manager Reina Rosarion traces her path to a simple realization: “I’ve always loved solving problems and understanding how things work.” That mindset has carried her through a career built on collaboration, trust, and continuous learning. A childhood science camp helped Camille Bizier Lavery‑, R&D Supervisor, see a future “I’ve always been curious about how technologies work, but it was during a science day camp that I knew engineering was what I wanted to do.” For Melanie Bailey, Service Account Manager, a high school‑ survey pointed her toward chemical engineering. “I’ve always enjoyed understanding how things work, and that curiosity naturally led me toward engineering.”

Together, their stories show that STEM doesn’t require a perfect plan — it begins with curiosity and grows with exploration.

  • Often the only woman in the room, Maha Esmat keeps the door open for those who follow. Representation matters.
  • Janella Cobrana training our Asia and Australian teams on UviTec Service and Commissioning fundamentals.
  • In the laboratory, in production, or in project management, Khaoula Fdil plays a key role—driving development, testing, and the coordination of continuous improvement initiatives.

STEM in Action Across ABB

In R&D, Camille leads teams that advance new products, enhance performance, and reduce environmental impact. In software engineering, Geneviève Le Houx develops tools that ensure ABB technologies deliver safe, reliable performance in real world conditions. On the front lines, Janella Cobrana partners with customers to boost reliability, efficiency, and sustainability across industrial operations.

Their work demonstrates how STEM at ABB ranges from deep research to applied engineering and hands-on problem-solving that powers Canadian industry.

Technology with Purpose

“Rooted in a deep respect for the environment, Lisa Labine and Jade are driven by a shared mission in the water sector. By deploying advanced monitoring technologies, they help safeguard ecosystems, protect communities, and ensure access to the clean water people need to thrive.”

Khaoula Fdil advances laser spectroscopy technologies that detect trace gases with exceptional precision — innovations that support safety in natural gas networks and contribute to environmental and scientific research. Meanwhile, Geneviève supports technologies used to monitor greenhouse gases and forest fires, aligning her work with her personal environmental values.

For Maha Esmat, Global Service Channel Operation Manager, lived experience gives her work deep meaning. By strengthening service delivery through partners, she helps improve the energy efficiency of thousands of motors and drives in regions where reliable energy cannot be taken for granted. Across critical infrastructure, Melanie draws on her engineering foundation to help customers plan for long‑term sustainability and operational resilience.

Confidence, Inclusion, and the Road Ahead

Like many women in STEM, these leaders have navigated environments where earning credibility takes time. Khaoula notes that communication skills and mentors made a profound difference. Janella adds, “Earning confidence and credibility in a male dominated field took time, but trusting my expertise and leaning on strong mentors helped me grow.” For Lisa, these challenges strengthened her resilience and underscored the importance of community: carving out space — but never doing it alone.

Inspiring Tomorrow’s Innovators

To girls and young women exploring STEM, these leaders offer a shared message: you belong here.

“You absolutely belong in STEM — stay curious, keep learning, and trust that your perspective is needed,” Reina says. STEM builds adaptability, confidence, and problem-solving skills that unlock meaningful, purpose driven careers. “Don’t let selfdoubt silence your potential,” Maha adds. “Seek mentors, ask questions, and give yourself permission to begin — even before you have all the answers.”

By celebrating Jade, Samirath, Reina, Camille, Melanie, Geneviève, Janella, Lisa, Khaoula, and Maha, ABB reaffirms its dedication to empowering diverse talent and enabling a more sustainable, resource-efficient world. On February 11 — and every day — ABB remains dedicated to empowering diverse talent and enabling a more sustainable, resource efficient world.
