ABB launches REX600: a compact protection and control device for digital substations

ABB has introduced the REX600, a next‑generation protection and control device that combines merging unit functionality, backup protection and fault detection in a single compact design. These capabilities make REX600 a dependable and flexible building block for today’s evolving grid needs.

REX600 integrates seamlessly with ABB’s centralized and virtualized protection solutions, SSC600 and SSC600 SW, as well as ABB’s Relion® protection relays, ensuring smooth and reliable deployment in digital substations.

Engineered for a wide variety of applications, REX600 offers freely configurable protection, control and measurement functions. It complies with several standards, including IEC 61850‑9‑2LE, IEC 61869‑9 for ensured interoperability in digital substations, and the IEC 61869‑13 merging unit standard - supporting flexible, multivendor system architectures built on open standards.

The device also includes accurate current based fault passage indication, enabling fast fault localization that strengthens grid resilience and supports faster service restoration.

Cyber security is a central feature of REX600. The device incorporates secure boot, TLS‑encrypted communication, role‑based access control and detailed audit logging, aligning with IEC 62443‑4‑1 and IEC 62443‑4‑2 standards for secure development and device security.

With its compact DIN‑rail‑mounted design, REX600 reduces installation time, cabling and engineering effort. It also strengthens substation reliability by providing built-in backup protection, maintaining essential functions, even if communication with a centralized device is temporarily interrupted.
